“Your Husband Is Amazing,” the Nurse Told My Boss—She Looked at Me and Said, “I Know.”

Chapter 5

The transplant gave Emily hope.

But it also created a new problem.

The donor match was temporary.

The surgery had to happen quickly.

Emily needed additional testing.

The hospital needed financial approval.

And there was one complication.

The procedure was extremely expensive.

Ethan had already spent years paying for Emily’s care.

His savings were nearly gone.

Claire didn’t hesitate.

“We’ll pay.”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

“Ethan.”

“No.”

“We’re married.”

“This is my responsibility.”

“She’s your sister.”

“Exactly.”

Claire stared.

“You’re still doing it.”

“Doing what?”

“Separating me from your family.”

Ethan became quiet.

Claire softened.

“I don’t want to replace you.”

“I know.”

“I want to stand beside you.”

He looked at her.

“I don’t know how to let someone help me.”

“Then learn.”

He smiled faintly.

“You’re very demanding.”

“Yes.”

They arranged the finances together.

Claire discovered something surprising.

Emily had never asked Ethan for money.

She had spent years telling him to save for himself.

The expenses had accumulated because Ethan refused to let her go without proper care.

Claire contacted the hospital foundation.

She negotiated assistance.

She used her professional network.

Within two weeks, most of the financial burden was covered.

But Emily still worried.

“What if it doesn’t work?”

Claire sat beside her.

“Then we’ll deal with that.”

Emily smiled.

“You sound like him.”

“I’ve been married to him for nine years.”

“That explains it.”

They laughed.

The night before surgery, Ethan sat beside Emily’s bed.

Claire watched from the doorway.

“I should have been there earlier,” he whispered.

Emily shook her head.

“You were a kid.”

“I was your brother.”

“You still are.”

He took her hand.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

“I should have fought harder.”

Emily smiled.

“You came every week for nine years.”

She squeezed his fingers.

“That’s fighting.”

Ethan cried.

Claire quietly closed the door.

The next morning, Emily went into surgery.

Hours passed.

Claire and Ethan waited.

Five hours.

Six.

Seven.

Finally, the surgeon emerged.

Ethan stood immediately.

“Doctor?”

The surgeon smiled.

“The transplant went well.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Claire grabbed his hand.

They held each other.

For the first time since they had met, Claire saw Ethan completely break down.

Not from fear.

From relief.

Later, Nurse Melissa walked into the waiting room.

She smiled at Claire.

“I told you.”

Claire smiled.

“Told me what?”

“Your husband is amazing.”

Claire looked at Ethan.

Then back at Melissa.

“I know.”

Melissa laughed.

“Now you do.”

But Claire realized something else.

Ethan wasn’t amazing because he had secretly sacrificed his life for his sister.

He was amazing because even when he was afraid, he kept showing up.

Every week.

For nine years.

Nobody had applauded him.

Nobody had known.

He simply did it because Emily needed him.

That night, Claire kissed his forehead.

“You know what?”

“What?”

“I’m proud of you.”

Ethan smiled.

“Thank you.”

“And I’m angry at you.”

He laughed.

“Fair.”
