“Your Husband Is Amazing,” the Nurse Told My Boss—She Looked at Me and Said, “I Know.”

Chapter 6

Emily recovered slowly.

The transplant wasn’t an instant miracle.

There were complications.

Medication.

Physical therapy.

Long hospital nights.

But she was alive.

And for the first time, Claire became part of that life openly.

Emily moved into a small apartment near Claire and Ethan’s home.

The first Sunday she visited their house, she stood awkwardly in the doorway.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.”

Claire laughed.

“Eat.”

Emily smiled.

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

Ethan walked into the kitchen.

“I made lasagna.”

Emily looked suspicious.

“You made it?”

“Yes.”

Claire whispered:

“He burned it last time.”

“I heard that.”

They laughed.

Dinner became a weekly tradition.

Emily slowly became part of their ordinary life.

She complained about Ethan.

She teased Claire.

She stole food.

She watched movies with them.

She became family.

Then one evening, Claire received a call from her boss.

Her company was preparing for a major acquisition.

Claire had been selected to lead negotiations.

It was the biggest opportunity of her career.

But it meant traveling for several months.

She told Ethan.

He smiled.

“You should take it.”

“I’m not sure.”

“Why?”

“I don’t want to leave you.”

“I’ll survive.”

“You just spent years taking care of Emily.”

“And now she has three people.”

Claire looked at him.

“Three?”

“Me, you, and herself.”

She smiled.

“That’s true.”

The next morning, Claire accepted the position.

Her boss, Victoria Grant, congratulated her.

Then Victoria asked:

“How does your husband feel?”

Claire smiled.

“He’s proud.”

Victoria nodded.

“I wish I had that.”

Claire looked at her.

“You don’t?”

Victoria shook her head.

“My husband died six years ago.”

“I’m sorry.”

“He was sick for a long time.”

Claire hesitated.

“Did you take care of him?”

“Every day.”

Victoria looked away.

“Until I couldn’t anymore.”

Claire understood.

Work had become Victoria’s shield.

She never spoke about her husband.

But something about Ethan’s story had touched her.

The following weeks were intense.

Claire traveled between Boston, New York, and Chicago.

Ethan supported her.

They called every night.

Sometimes they argued.

Sometimes they missed each other.

But they talked.

They didn’t hide.

That became the difference.

Meanwhile, Emily began volunteering at the hospital.

She wanted to help other patients who had spent years feeling forgotten.

Nurse Melissa became one of her closest friends.

One day, Melissa told Emily:

“Your brother changed that department.”

Emily smiled.

“He doesn’t know.”

“He should.”

Emily shook her head.

“That’s Ethan.”

But a problem was coming.

A problem nobody expected.

Because Claire’s boss had begun investigating Ethan.

And she wasn’t doing it because she distrusted him.

She was doing it because someone had accused him of something serious.
