Chapter 4 

After dinner, Victoria pulled me onto the balcony.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“All of this.”
I leaned against the railing.
“You could’ve warned me.”
“I thought you’d say no.”
“I probably would’ve.”
She smiled.
“Exactly.”
I looked at her.
“Why me?”
She was quiet.
“Because you’re the only person at the company who doesn’t treat me differently because of my last name.”
I didn’t know what to say.
She continued.
“And because I trust you.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Then the balcony door opened.
Her brother, Ethan, stepped outside.
“Victoria.”
She turned.
“What?”
“Dad wants to see Daniel.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
Ethan shrugged.
“He’s interviewing him.”
Victoria sighed.
“Don’t let him intimidate you.”
“I’ll try.”
Ethan smiled.
“Good luck.”
Inside, Richard was waiting.
He poured two glasses of water.
“Sit.”
I sat.
He studied me.
“What do you want from my daughter?”
“Nothing.”
“Everyone wants something.”
“I don’t.”
He leaned back.
“Then why are you here?”
I thought about Victoria’s face.
“Because she asked me to be.”
Richard stared at me.
Then he smiled.
“Interesting.”
He stood.
“You may be more complicated than you look.”
I wasn’t sure whether that was a compliment.
Then he said:
“Tomorrow, I want you at Sterling Industries.”
“Why?”
“I have a job for you.”
I looked at him.
“I’m already employed.”
“Not by me.”
He walked away.
I had no idea what he meant.
But Victoria did.
When I told her, she looked alarmed.
“My father never offers jobs.”
“What does he do?”
“He tests people.”
