The next morning, I arrived at Sterling Industries.
Richard was waiting.
He took me to the executive floor.
“I want you to accompany Victoria to an important meeting.”
“Why?”
“Because I want to see how you handle pressure.”
The meeting was with three major investors.
Victoria entered confidently.
I stood behind her.
Everything went smoothly until one investor accused Victoria of hiding financial information.
She remained calm.
Then he placed a folder on the table.
“Explain this.”
Victoria opened it.
Her expression changed.
The numbers were wrong.
Someone had altered the report.
She looked at me.
I remembered something.
Two days earlier, I’d delivered a package to the accounting department.
The same logo appeared on the documents.
“Victoria.”
She looked up.
“I think I know where those numbers came from.”
The room went silent.
I explained what I’d seen.
The investors checked the records.
The accusation collapsed.
Afterward, Victoria walked beside me.
“You saved me.”
“I just noticed something.”
“Still.”
She stopped.
“Thank you.”
Then she smiled.
“You’re becoming a very convincing boyfriend.”
I laughed.
“That was the plan.”
She looked away.
“Was it?”
I didn’t understand why her voice sounded different.
Neither of us noticed Richard watching from across the hallway.
