Tipsy Waitress Poked the Mafia Boss’s Chest—Then He Slung Her Over His Shoulder and Took Her
Chapter 10
Luca pushed Mia to the floor.
Her father pulled her behind a stone pillar.
Marcus disappeared through a side door.
“Dad!”
“Stay down!”
Luca’s men stormed the church.
The gunfire lasted less than a minute.
When silence returned, Marcus was gone.
But Mia’s father remained.
He was injured.
Luca crouched beside him.
“Where did Marcus go?”
Her father shook his head.
“He has another base.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
Mia grabbed her father’s hand.
“You have to know something.”
He looked at her.
“I know why he wanted you.”
“Why?”
“Because you’re the only person he can’t control.”
She frowned.
“I don’t understand.”
Her father pointed toward the ledger.
“Your mother didn’t hide it because she wanted to expose him.”
“Then why?”
“She hid it because she knew someone would eventually use it to control the entire network.”
“Who?”
“Luca.”
Everyone became silent.
Luca stared at him.
“Me?”
“Your father intended to give it to you.”
“Why?”
“Because he believed you were the only man ruthless enough to destroy the organization and disciplined enough not to become it.”
Luca’s jaw tightened.
Mia looked at him.
“You’ve been fighting this your whole life.”
“Yes.”
Her father nodded.
“Then finish it.”
A gunshot cracked from outside.
Her father collapsed.
Mia screamed.
Luca caught her before she ran into the open.
“Stay here!”
He disappeared through the doors.
Mia held her father’s hand.
“Please.”
He looked at her.
“I was so proud of you.”
Then his eyes closed.
Mia broke down.
Hours later, Luca found her alone in the chapel.
He sat beside her.
She leaned against him.
“I lost him twice.”
“I know.”
“First when I was six.”
“Yes.”
“And now.”
Luca wrapped an arm around her.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Then Mia lifted her head.
“I don’t want revenge.”
Luca looked at her.
“What do you want?”
“Justice.”
His eyes softened.
“Then that’s what we’ll give them.”
Mia took his hand.
And for the first time, Luca realized he wasn’t protecting her because she was helpless.
He was protecting her because she had become the one person who could remind him why he was still human.
