Mia remembered almost nothing about the drive.

She remembered rain striking the windows.

She remembered Luca’s hand catching her when she nearly fell out of the car.

And she remembered being furious.

“You kidnapped me.”

“You’re welcome.”

“You cannot say ‘you’re welcome’ after kidnapping someone.”

“You’re alive.”

“That doesn’t make it legal.”

Luca glanced at her.

“You’re remarkably argumentative for someone who can barely walk straight.”

“I can walk.”

Mia opened the car door.

Her foot touched the pavement.

She immediately stumbled.

Luca caught her before she hit the ground.

“I hate you.”

“No, you don’t.”

“You don’t know me.”

“I know enough.”

His estate stood behind tall iron gates, surrounded by dark trees and armed security.

Mia stared at the enormous house.

“Where are we?”

“My home.”

“Absolutely not.”

She turned around.

Luca picked her up again.

“No!”

He carried her inside.

“I have legs!”

“I noticed.”

“You’re impossible!”

“You’re loud.”

“You’re a criminal!”

“Also true.”

That answer silenced her.

Luca carried her upstairs and placed her on a guest bed.

He stepped back immediately.

“You’ll sleep here.”

Mia narrowed her eyes.

“Why?”

“Because someone at the restaurant was carrying a gun.”

Her anger disappeared.

“What?”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“The man wasn’t there for me.”

Mia swallowed.

“Then who?”

“You.”

She stared at him.

“Why would anyone want to kill a waitress?”

“That,” Luca said quietly, “is what I’m going to find out.”

He left.

Mia sat frozen on the bed.

For the first time that night, the alcohol couldn’t protect her from reality.

And the only reason she was alive was because the man everyone feared had decided she was worth protecting.
