Tipsy Waitress Poked the Mafia Boss’s Chest—Then He Slung Her Over His Shoulder and Took Her
Chapter 3
By morning, Mia wanted to believe everything had been a drunken nightmare.
Then she saw the security outside her door.
She found Luca downstairs, drinking coffee while reading several documents.
“I want to go home.”
“No.”
“You don’t get to decide that.”
“Normally, I’d agree.”
He slid a photograph across the table.
Mia looked at it.
Her stomach dropped.
It was her.
Taken outside the restaurant three nights earlier.
Another showed her leaving her apartment.
Another showed her walking to work.
“Where did you get these?”
“We found them on the man from last night.”
Mia sat down.
Luca watched her carefully.
“Do you recognize anyone?”
“No.”
She flipped through the photographs.
Then stopped.
A face appeared in the background of one image.
Her former employer.
Victor Kane.
Mia’s hands began to shake.
“That’s Mr. Kane.”
“Who is he?”
“He owns the restaurant.”
Luca leaned back.
“Interesting.”
Mia looked up.
“He wouldn’t hurt me.”
“Why?”
“He helped me get the job.”
“People can help you for reasons that have nothing to do with kindness.”
Mia stared at the picture again.
Then remembered something.
A week earlier, Victor had asked her to deliver an envelope to a private office upstairs.
She hadn’t opened it.
But she’d noticed the name printed on a document inside.
Moretti.
Luca’s expression hardened.
“What exactly did you see?”
“I don’t know.”
“Mia.”
“I said I don’t know!”
She stood abruptly.
“I was just doing my job.”
Luca approached slowly.
“You may have seen something that powerful people are willing to kill for.”
Mia’s breathing became shallow.
“What was in that envelope?”
“That,” Luca said, “is what we’re going to find out.”
Before she could answer, Luca’s phone rang.
He listened.
His face changed.
“What happened?”
A pause.
Then:
“Don’t touch anything.”
He ended the call.
Mia stood.
“What?”
Luca looked at her.
“The restaurant burned down an hour ago.”
