At three in the morning, she found Luca alone in the study.

“You should be sleeping.”

“So should you.”

“I don’t sleep much.”

“That’s unhealthy.”

“So is confronting armed men while drunk.”

She crossed her arms.

“I wasn’t that drunk.”

Luca looked at her.

Mia’s cheeks warmed.

“About that…”

“I enjoyed it.”

“What?”

“You heard me.”

Luca returned to his papers.

“Why are you protecting me?”

He stopped reading.

“Because I can.”

Finally he said, “Years ago, someone I cared about was killed because I wasn’t fast enough to protect her.”

His voice was controlled, but something wounded lived beneath it.

“I promised myself I wouldn’t make that mistake again.”

Mia softened.

“What happened?”

“My men found Victor Kane.”

Then he nodded.

“Stay beside me.”

They found Kane in an abandoned warehouse.

He was terrified.

He looked at Mia.

“You shouldn’t have survived.”

Luca stepped forward.

“Who ordered the hit?”

Kane shook his head.

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

“They’ll kill my family.”

“Who?”

Kane stared at Mia.

Then whispered:

“Your father.”

Mia froze.

“My father died when I was six.”

Kane’s face went pale.

“No.”

He pointed toward Luca.

“Your father didn’t die.”
