The Single Mom Was Fired After Saving the CEO’s Father — Until the Millionaire Stepped In
Chapter 13
At fifty-three, Ethan faced a health scare.
Nothing catastrophic.
But it frightened him.
Megan insisted he slow down.
“You need rest.”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re lying.”
He laughed.
“You always know.”
“Yes.”
He rested.
Delegated.
And realized the company would survive without him.
That was a lesson he had resisted.
Megan helped him learn it.
They spent more time together.
They traveled with Lily.
Visited Richard.
Helped the foundation.
The years seemed precious.
One evening, Ethan asked:
“Do you ever think about that cardboard box?”
Megan smiled.
“Sometimes.”
“Why?”
“Because I thought it meant I had failed.”
He shook his head.
“You hadn’t.”
“I know now.”
“What did it mean?”
She looked at him.
“That something was over.”
“And?”
“Something else was beginning.”
He smiled.
“Good.”
She leaned against him.
“I was terrified.”
“So was I.”
“Of what?”
“That I’d lose you.”
She looked up.
“We haven’t.”
“No.”
“Not yet.”
“We don’t talk like that.”
She smiled.
“Why?”
“Because we’re going to assume tomorrow.”
She nodded.
“Tomorrow.”
That became their private promise.
Don’t assume forever.
Choose tomorrow.
Again and again.
