Released at 24, She Went Back to Her Father’s Old Body Shop — Under the Lift Sat a Welded Trunk

Chapter 1

The first thing Claire Morgan noticed after six years behind bars was how loud freedom could be.

Cars passed outside the bus station.

People laughed.

A truck horn blared somewhere down the street.

Nobody looked at her.

Nobody cared that she had just spent six years of her life locked away.

Claire stood beneath the gray Ohio sky holding a plastic bag containing everything the prison had returned to her.

Her wallet.

A photograph.

A cheap watch.

And a folded letter from her father.

She had read it so many times that the paper had become soft around the edges.

Her father had written only one sentence.

Come home when you’re ready. The truth is still waiting for you.

He had died two years earlier.

Claire had never made it home.

She had been too angry.

Too ashamed.

Too afraid.

Now she had nowhere else to go.

So she drove the twenty minutes to Morgan’s Body & Collision.

The old shop stood at the edge of town, surrounded by weeds and rusting cars.

The sign above the entrance had lost several letters.

The windows were dusty.

The garage doors were locked.

Claire found the spare key exactly where her father used to keep it.

Under the third flowerpot.

The door opened with a groan.

The smell hit her immediately.

Oil.

Metal.

Old rubber.

Her father’s workshop.

For a moment, Claire was seventeen again.

She could almost hear him laughing from beneath a car.

“Hand me the twelve-millimeter.”

She closed her eyes.

Then she walked inside.

Everything had been left almost exactly as it was.

His workbench.

His coffee mug.

His faded baseball cap.

Even the old radio.

Claire touched the workbench.

Dust covered her fingers.

Then she noticed something.

A deep scratch ran across the concrete floor.

It disappeared beneath the hydraulic lift.

Claire crouched.

She brushed away the dirt.

There was something underneath.

Metal.

A rectangular shape.

She grabbed a flashlight.

The beam revealed a large steel trunk.

It had been pushed beneath the lift.

And someone had welded it shut.

Claire stared at it.

Her father had never owned a trunk like this.

She ran her fingers over the weld marks.

They were fresh compared with everything else in the building.

Someone had wanted this hidden.

Someone had wanted it forgotten.

Claire stood slowly.

Then she remembered her father’s final words.

The truth is still waiting for you.

For the first time since leaving prison, she felt something other than fear.

Hope.

She found an old welding cutter in the workshop.

And began cutting.
