“Is he really rich?”

“Like TV rich?”

“Does he have a swimming pool?”
“I don’t know.”
“Ask him.”
“I’m not asking my boss about his pool.”
Lily rolled her eyes.
“You adults are weird.”
Ethan overheard.
“I have two.”
Lily’s eyes widened.
“Really?”
He nodded.
“One is at the city house.”
“What about the other?”
“Lake house.”
Lily looked at Megan.
“Mom.”
Megan laughed.
“Don’t.”
They became a strange little family before anyone admitted it.
Dinner.
Homework.
Weekend outings.
Ethan helped Lily build a science project.
Megan watched them.
She felt happy.
Then guilt.
She had promised herself never to let another man into Lily’s life unless she was certain.
She had seen men come and go.
She wouldn’t allow that again.
Ethan understood.
He never rushed.
He never demanded a title.
He simply showed up.
One evening, Lily fell asleep on the couch.
Ethan carried her to bed.
Megan watched from the hallway.
“Thank you.”
He nodded.
She whispered:
“You’re good with her.”
“I like her.”
“She likes you.”
“I know.”
Megan smiled.

“What?”
She looked at him.
“I don’t know what we’re doing.”
Ethan answered:
“Neither do I.”
“We work together.”
“Not directly anymore.”
“You’re still my boss.”
“Technically.”
“And you’re…”
He waited.
She didn’t finish.
Ethan didn’t force her.
“I’m patient.”
She smiled.
“That’s dangerous.”
“Maybe.”
Their first kiss happened weeks later.
After a long day.
Megan was leaving the office.
Ethan followed her outside.
Rain had started.
She looked at him.
“You’re going to get wet.”
“So are you.”
She laughed.
He stepped closer.
“Can I?”
She nodded.
The kiss was gentle.

No promises.

When they separated, Megan whispered:
“This changes everything.”
“Yes.”
“And Lily?”
“We go slowly.”
She nodded.
Then walked to her car smiling.

A lawyer contacted Megan.
He represented Lily’s biological father.
