The Mafia Boss Caught His Secretary Packing—Then Found the Threat Hidden Under Her Desk
Chapter 7
Carlo raised his hands.
“No need for weapons.”
Marco stared at him.
“You followed her.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Carlo looked at Elena.
“Because she has something Vincent needs.”
“What?”
Carlo smiled.
“Information.”
Elena looked confused.
“I don’t have anything.”
“You do.”
Carlo pointed toward her handbag.
“Your old notebook.”
Elena’s face changed.
She had brought it with her.
“I found it.”
Carlo nodded.
“You wrote down the account numbers.”
Marco stepped forward.
“You could have taken it from the office.”
“We tried.”
“And?”
“You noticed.”
Carlo smiled.
“That made things interesting.”
Marco’s men surrounded them.
Carlo had more men.
The tension was immediate.
But Carlo didn’t attack.
Instead, he said:
“Vincent wants to talk.”
Marco laughed.
“Then tell him to call.”
“He doesn’t trust you.”
“Good.”
Carlo looked toward Elena.
“He trusts fear.”
Marco’s expression darkened.
Carlo continued:
“Give us the notebook.”
Elena held it tighter.
“No.”
Carlo smiled.
“I expected that.”
Then he walked away.
The vehicles left.
Marco looked at Elena.
“Did you notice anything?”
“What?”
“He never tried to take it.”
She frowned.
“He didn’t?”
“No.”
Marco opened the notebook.
The account numbers were there.
But one page had been removed.
The page Elena had written the most important information on.
She looked at it.
“I tore that page out.”
Marco looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because I realized someone was watching me.”
“Where is it?”
“In my house.”
Marco stared.
“Your old apartment?”
“Yes.”
They returned under heavy security.
The missing page was hidden inside a book.
It contained a single account number.
Marco recognized it.
It belonged to an account controlled by Vincent.
But beneath the number was another note.
Payment received from V.M. to G.P.
Giovanni Paolo.
Marco’s own brother.
Marco froze.
He had assumed the name was a coincidence.
It wasn’t.
Elena looked at him.
“Your family.”
Marco nodded.
“It goes deeper than I thought.”
His brother had been presumed dead years earlier in an accident.
Another death that might have been fabricated.
Marco called his mother.
She didn’t answer.
He called his aunt.
No answer.
The family had been fractured for years.
Maybe that was exactly how Vincent had survived.
Marco sat down.
Elena knelt beside him.
“You okay?”
He laughed bitterly.
“No.”
She touched his hand.
“You don’t have to pretend.”
He looked at her.
“I don’t know who to trust.”
She whispered:
“You can trust me.”
Marco stared at her.
Then pulled her close.
It was the first time he had allowed himself to show how afraid he was.
He held her tightly.
Elena rested her head against him.
For a moment, the threats disappeared.
Then Marco’s phone rang.
The caller ID showed an unknown number.
He answered.
Vincent’s voice came through.
“Bring Elena.”
Marco’s face hardened.
“Why?”
“Because she has something I want.”
“She stays with me.”
Vincent laughed.
“That is exactly why she is useful.”
The line went dead.
Marco looked at Elena.
She knew.
Whatever happened next would change both their lives.
