The Mafia Boss Caught His Secretary Packing—Then Found the Threat Hidden Under Her Desk
Chapter 6
“My family?”
Giovanni nodded.
“Your uncle.”
Marco’s expression became unreadable.
“My uncle died six years ago.”
“I know.”
“Then choose your words carefully.”
Giovanni looked terrified.
“He didn’t die.”
Silence.
Elena stared at him.
“What?”
Giovanni explained.
Marco’s uncle, Vincent Moretti, had faked his death after being accused of financial crimes.
He had disappeared.
Changed his identity.
And built connections overseas.
Marco didn’t believe him.
Until Giovanni showed him a photograph.
Vincent.
Alive.
Older.
Standing beside Carlo.
Marco stared at the image.
“Where?”
“Europe.”
“Why now?”
“Because he wants the company.”
Marco laughed bitterly.
“He could have taken it years ago.”
“He needed you.”
“For what?”
“To build it bigger.”
Giovanni explained that Vincent had been manipulating company accounts for years.
Carlo handled operations.
Giovanni handled financial transfers.
Together, they planned to eventually remove Marco.
“But why Elena?”
Giovanni looked at her.
“Because she found the numbers.”
Marco nodded slowly.
“So they threatened her.”
“Yes.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
Marco looked at him.
“Then prove it.”
Giovanni handed him another file.
Inside were emails.
Orders.
Payment records.
And one message from Vincent.
The secretary must be frightened enough to leave.
Marco’s hands tightened.
They had deliberately targeted Elena.
Not to kill her.
To drive her away before she discovered the full scheme.
Then Marco found something worse.
The final message.
If Moretti refuses to sell, eliminate him.
Elena read it.
Her face went pale.
Marco closed the file.
“We’re leaving.”
As they drove away, Marco was silent.
Elena looked at him.
“You believe him?”
“Yes.”
“What will you do?”
“Protect the company.”
“And me?”
He looked at her.
“You’re part of the company.”
She smiled sadly.
“That’s not what I meant.”
Marco’s hands tightened on the steering wheel.
“No.”
He pulled over.
“What?”
“You’re not just an employee.”
Elena’s heart stopped.
Marco looked at her.
“You became important to me a long time ago.”
She stared.
“Then why did you never say anything?”
“Because I had no right to ask.”
“Why?”
“Because the life I live isn’t safe.”
Elena whispered:
“I already know.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You know the surface.”
“And what is underneath?”
“Blood.”
She looked at him.
“I care anyway.”
Marco went silent.
He didn’t touch her.
Didn’t kiss her.
He simply started the car again.
But something had changed.
Then Elena noticed a vehicle following them.
Black sedan.
Same one from her apartment.
“Marco.”
He looked in the mirror.
The sedan stayed three cars behind.
Marco accelerated.
It followed.
The road narrowed.
Marco turned onto a private route.
The sedan followed.
Then another car appeared ahead.
They were surrounded.
Marco reached for his phone.
“Hold on.”
Elena grabbed his arm.
“What?”
A third vehicle blocked the road.
Men stepped out.
Marco stopped.
The driver of the black sedan stepped forward.
He was tall.
Gray-haired.
A scar crossed his cheek.
Carlo.
He looked directly at Elena.
Then smiled.
“Finally.”
