The Mafia Boss Caught His Secretary Packing—Then Found the Threat Hidden Under Her Desk
Chapter 2
Marco locked the office door.
“Sit.”
Elena obeyed.
He placed both photographs on the desk.
“When did this begin?”
“Four days ago.”
“Why wait?”
“I didn’t think it was real.”
“You saw someone following you?”
She nodded.
“Twice.”
“Did you tell anyone?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Elena looked down.
“Because I thought if I told you, you’d think I was causing trouble.”
Marco stared at her.
“Did I ever say that?”
“No.”
“But you thought it.”
She nodded.
Marco took a slow breath.
He had spent his life surrounded by people who lied to survive.
He had learned to recognize fear.
Elena wasn’t lying now.
“Tell me exactly what happened.”
She explained.
Four days earlier, she’d noticed the same dark sedan outside her apartment.
The following day, she found a note under her windshield wiper.
You know too much.
She threw it away.
Then yesterday, someone had called her from a blocked number.
No words.
Just breathing.
This morning, she found the first photograph.
Tonight, she found the second.
Marco listened without interrupting.
When she finished, he asked:
“What do you know?”
“Nothing.”
“That’s not true.”
Elena hesitated.
Then she said:
“I know the company accounts have been changing.”
Marco’s eyes narrowed.
“What accounts?”
“Your private company accounts.”
She explained that several payments had been rerouted through shell companies over the previous six months.
She had noticed because she prepared Marco’s financial schedules.
At first, she thought it was normal.
Then she noticed the same vendor names appearing under different subsidiaries.
Money went out.
Then came back.
Sometimes more.
Sometimes less.
But always through companies no one recognized.
Marco stared at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I didn’t know whether you were already aware.”
“I wasn’t.”
That frightened her.
Marco stood.
“Who else handles those files?”
“Your CFO.”
“Giovanni?”
“Yes.”
Marco’s expression hardened.
Giovanni Ferrara had been with the organization for fifteen years.
He had eaten at Marco’s table.
Attended family events.
Managed millions.
Marco trusted very few people.
Giovanni had been one of them.
Until tonight.
Marco called his security chief.
“Lock the building.”
A voice answered immediately.
“No one enters or leaves without authorization.”
Marco continued:
“Find out who accessed Elena’s office today.”
“Yes, boss.”
He ended the call.
Elena looked nervous.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For bringing this to you.”
“You didn’t bring this to me.”
He picked up the photograph.
“Someone brought it.”
Then he noticed something else.
A faint smear of dirt on the envelope.
He examined it closely.
“Where did you find this?”
“Under my desk.”
Marco looked underneath again.
A small scratch marked the floor.
Fresh.
Someone had moved the desk recently.
He called security.
“Pull the office camera footage from the last forty-eight hours.”
A pause.
Then:
“Sir, we have a problem.”
“What?”
“The camera system was disabled yesterday.”
Marco’s eyes narrowed.
“For how long?”
“Twenty-three minutes.”
“By whom?”
“Your administrative access code.”
Silence.
Marco looked at Elena.
Someone had used his authorization to enter her office.
That narrowed the list.
Then the security chief added:
“The access code belongs to Giovanni Ferrara.”
