The Mafia Boss Caught His Secretary Packing—Then Found the Threat Hidden Under Her Desk
Chapter 13
At sixty-five, Marco retired.
He handed daily leadership to a younger team.
Elena retired with him.
They bought a small house outside the city.
No guards.
No corporate offices.
No late-night meetings.
Just a garden.
A library.
A kitchen.
And grandchildren.
One afternoon, Marco found Elena sitting under a tree reading.
He sat beside her.
“Do you ever think about that first night?”
She smiled.
“Which first night?”
“The suitcase.”
She laughed.
“I thought you’d forgotten.”
“I remember everything.”
“You looked terrifying.”
“I was.”
“I thought you were going to fire me.”
“I thought you were going to disappear.”
She closed the book.
“Did you ever tell me why you were so afraid?”
Marco nodded.
“I had already lost too many people.”
She touched his hand.
“And you didn’t want to lose me.”
“No.”
He kissed her forehead.
Their granddaughter ran across the lawn.
“Grandpa!”
He stood.
“What?”
“Come look!”
She pulled him toward the garden.
A nest of ducklings had appeared near the pond.
Marco laughed.
Elena watched.
The man who had once commanded an empire now spent his mornings feeding birds.
Life had changed.
The past remained.
But it no longer carried the weight it once did.
