The Mafia Boss Caught His Secretary Packing—Then Found the Threat Hidden Under Her Desk
Chapter 5
The next morning, Elena showed Marco the message.
He read it twice.
“Delete it.”
She frowned.
“Why?”
“Because whoever sent it wants you asking questions.”
“Maybe I should.”
“No.”
She crossed her arms.
“You keep telling me not to ask questions.”
“Because you’re not equipped for the answers.”
“That isn’t your decision.”
Marco looked at her.
“You think I want you involved?”
“No.”
“You think I enjoy this?”
“No.”
“Then stop trying to turn fear into courage.”
Elena stared at him.
“I’m not afraid of you.”
“I know.”
“I’m afraid of not knowing.”
That silenced him.
Marco finally sat down.
“Eight years ago, Carlo worked for my father.”
Elena listened.
“He betrayed us.”
“How?”
“He sold information to a rival organization.”
“Did he hurt anyone?”
Marco’s eyes hardened.
“People died.”
“What happened to him?”
“I forced him out.”
“Out of the country?”
“Yes.”
“Did you kill him?”
Marco looked at her.
“No.”
She exhaled.
“He swore revenge.”
“I assumed he’d forgotten.”
Elena shook her head.
“People don’t forget revenge.”
Marco almost smiled.
“You sound like you’ve been around this world too long.”
“I’ve worked for you three years.”
“Fair.”
They continued investigating.
The financial records revealed that Carlo had established a hidden network inside Moretti businesses.
But one question remained.
Why target Elena?
Then they found the missing notebook.
Security recovered it from a storage room inside the headquarters.
Several pages had been torn out.
Elena looked at the remaining notes.
She froze.
“The night of the board meeting.”
Marco looked at her.
“What?”
She pointed to a page.
Three dates.
Three bank transfers.
Three meetings.
And one repeated location.
A private warehouse on the river.
Marco knew the place.
No one used it anymore.
“Carlo’s operating there.”
They went that afternoon with security.
The warehouse was empty.
But the walls contained fresh markings.
A red circle around a photograph.
It was Elena.
Taken outside the office.
Next to her was Marco.
Someone had been tracking both of them.
On the floor was another envelope.
Marco opened it.
Inside was a note.
You keep looking at the wrong man.
Beneath it was a name.
Giovanni.
Marco’s eyes narrowed.
Elena stared.
“Maybe he’s the traitor.”
Marco said nothing.
Then his phone rang.
It was Giovanni.
He claimed to have information about Carlo.
“Meet me alone.”
Marco asked:
“Where?”
“Your father’s old villa.”
Marco looked at Elena.
The location was isolated.
He knew it was a trap.
Still, he went.
Elena refused to stay behind.
“You’re not going alone.”
Marco frowned.
“No.”
“Then don’t ask me to sit here while you walk into a trap.”
He stared at her.
Then nodded.
They drove to the villa.
Giovanni was waiting.
He stood near the old fireplace.
“You came.”
Marco looked around.
“Talk.”
Giovanni took a breath.
“Carlo isn’t the mastermind.”
“Who is?”
Giovanni looked at Elena.
Then at Marco.
“Someone inside your family.”
Marco froze.
