The first event was the 100-meter race.
Greyhaven lost.
The second event was archery.
Blackridge won.
The third was wrestling.
Another Blackridge victory.
By noon, the scoreboard looked terrible.
Blackridge supporters cheered.
Greyhaven supporters became quieter.
Ethan watched the athletes.
They were losing confidence again.
He walked toward them.
Nobody looked up.
He stopped beside the youngest runner.
“You all right?”
The boy nodded.
Ethan waited.
The boy finally looked up.
“We’re losing.”
“I know.”
“We can’t beat them.”
Ethan looked toward the scoreboard.
“Not today.”
The boy frowned.
“What?”
“You can’t beat them today if you’re already thinking about the final score.”
He pointed toward the track.
“Right now, you have one race.”
The boy nodded.
“That’s it.”
“One race.”
“Win that one.”
The boy stood.
Then walked back toward the starting line.
