The Blackridge buses left after dark.

This time, nobody shouted insults.

Nobody laughed.

The rivalry remained.

But something had changed.

Blackridge had finally learned to respect Greyhaven.

Not because Greyhaven had become richer.

Not because they had suddenly acquired better equipment.

Not because they had become stronger than Blackridge.

They had simply stopped being afraid of losing.

Ethan stood near the harbor as the buses disappeared down the road.

Walter joined him.

“You know what this means?”

Ethan looked at him.

“What?”

“Next year, they’re going to come angry.”

Ethan smiled.

“Good.”

Walter laughed.

“You really like this competition now.”

Ethan looked toward the town.

“I like seeing them believe in themselves.”

Walter nodded.

“So do I.”
