Ethan didn’t hear the cheering at first.
He was watching the boat.
The rowers were exhausted.
One collapsed backward.
Another was crying.
Walter ran toward the dock.
“WE WON!”
Ethan smiled.
“Yeah.”
Walter grabbed him.
“We actually won!”
Ethan laughed.
People poured toward the water.
June was shouting.
Children were jumping.
Someone had climbed onto a bench.
The Greyhaven flag was raised.
And across the harbor, the Blackridge team stood silently.
Their captain stared at the scoreboard.
Then at Ethan.
He walked toward him.
Ethan waited.
The captain stopped a few feet away.
“You’re not even from here.”
Ethan nodded.
“No.”
“Then why do you care?”
Ethan looked over his shoulder.
The Greyhaven crowd was celebrating.
“Because they do.”
The captain looked at them.
For the first time, he understood.
