The Billionaire’s Daughter Drove Every Maid Away — Until One Woman Refused to Be Afraid of Her
Chapter 8
Then the secret arrived.
It came in the form of an old photograph.
Isabella found it in her father’s study.
The photograph showed her mother standing beside Clara’s mother.
They were young.
Friends.
Smiling.
On the back was a date.
Twenty-five years earlier.
And underneath:
For the girls.
Isabella felt confused.
She showed Clara.
Clara’s face went pale.
“My mother.”
“Yes.”
“They knew each other?”
Clara nodded slowly.
“Very well.”
“Why?”
Clara sat down.
“Because our families were connected.”
“How?”
Clara hesitated.
“Your mother helped my family.”
“With what?”
“Money.”
Isabella frowned.
“My father?”
“He doesn’t know everything.”
That answer made Isabella suspicious.
“What are you hiding?”
Clara sighed.
“My mother worked for your family before you were born.”
“She was a maid?”
“Yes.”
Isabella stared at the photograph.
“Then why were they friends?”
“Because your mother treated her like an equal.”
Something inside Isabella shifted.
Her mother had not been distant from everyone.
She had built friendships across class.
She had wanted Isabella to see people differently.
Then Clara revealed something else.
“Your mother wrote me a letter before she died.”
Isabella froze.
“What letter?”
Clara looked down.
“I never gave it to you.”
“Why?”
“Because your father told me not to.”
Isabella felt cold.
“What did it say?”
Clara looked at her.
“That she was worried about what would happen to you after she was gone.”
Isabella’s heart began racing.
Her mother had known.
She had anticipated everything.
And somehow, Clara was part of a promise that had lasted decades.
