The Billionaire’s Daughter Drove Every Maid Away — Until One Woman Refused to Be Afraid of Her

Chapter 4

Three weeks later, Isabella found Clara sitting alone in the kitchen after midnight.

“You still work this late?”

Clara looked up.

“Sometimes.”

“Why?”

“Because someone has to finish.”

Isabella sat across from her.

It was the first time she’d voluntarily entered the kitchen after hours.

“Do you have family?”

Clara smiled faintly.

“A sister.”

“Parents?”

“My mother died when I was young.”

Isabella became quiet.

“My mother died when I was sixteen.”

Clara looked at her.

“I know.”

“How?”

“Your father mentioned it.”

Isabella stared at her hands.

“Everyone thinks I’m spoiled because of my father.”

Clara didn’t answer.

“They don’t know what it was like after she died.”

Still silence.

“He was always working.”

Clara poured tea.

“Your father?”

“Yes.”

“He probably thought providing for you was enough.”

“Maybe.”

Isabella looked toward the dark windows.

“It wasn’t.”

Clara nodded.

“I know.”

That answer surprised her.

“You don’t even know me.”

“No.”

Clara pushed a cup toward her.

“But I know what it’s like to miss someone while pretending you’re fine.”

Isabella looked at the tea.

“Why do you stay?”

“Because your father pays me.”

Isabella laughed.

“Finally, an honest answer.”

Clara smiled.

“But that’s not the only reason.”

“What is the other reason?”

“You aren’t what you pretend to be.”

Isabella looked up sharply.

“What am I pretending to be?”

“Untouchable.”

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Isabella whispered:

“Maybe I don’t know how to be anything else.”

Clara didn’t give advice.

She simply sat there.

That was the first night Isabella didn’t ask a maid to leave.
