Single Dad Stopped to Help a Struggling Old Man… Then He Met the Daughter Who Changed His Life
Chapter 8
Daniel wanted to leave immediately.
Sophia stopped him.
“If you go alone, he’ll use Lily against you.”
“She’s my daughter.”
“I know.”
“I’m going.”
“I’m coming.”
“No.”
Sophia stepped closer.
“Daniel.”
He looked at her.
“You helped my father.”
“I helped a stranger.”
“You helped my family.”
She took his hand.
“Now let me help yours.”
They flew home.
Lily was already with a private security team.
Daniel held her so tightly she complained.
“Daddy, you’re squishing me.”
He laughed through tears.
“Sorry.”
Lily looked at Sophia.
“Are you staying?”
Sophia smiled.
“Yes.”
Lily nodded.
“Good.”
Daniel looked at her.
She had made the decision before he had.
That night, they prepared the final move.
Charles had called for an emergency board meeting.
He intended to take control of Bennett Holdings.
They would let him.
The boardroom was packed.
Charles entered wearing a dark suit.
He looked older than the photograph.
But unmistakably alive.
Sophia stood at the far end of the table.
“Uncle.”
Charles smiled.
“Niece.”
“You should be dead.”
“So should your mother.”
Sophia’s face hardened.
“But we’re not.”
Charles looked at Daniel.
“And you.”
Daniel said nothing.
“You’ve inherited your father’s stubbornness.”
“I inherited his memory.”
Charles laughed.
“You know nothing.”
Daniel placed the memory card on the table.
Charles froze.
“You should.”
Sophia pressed play.
Daniel’s father’s voice filled the room.
The confession.
The transfers.
The names.
Charles tried to interrupt.
“That’s fabricated.”
Then Sophia’s mother entered the room.
Charles went pale.
She looked directly at him.
“Hello, brother.”
The board erupted.
Federal agents entered.
Charles tried to run.
Security stopped him.
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
“You can’t do this.”
Sophia stared at him.
“You did this.”
Charles looked toward Daniel.
“You think you won.”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Charles smiled.
“There is still one account.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“The Blackwood Account.”
Charles nodded.
“It contains everything.”
Sophia frowned.
“What?”
“Evidence.”
“Where?”
Charles laughed.
“You already have the key.”
Daniel remembered.
The small key his father had given Arthur.
He looked at Sophia.
They both understood.
Blackwood wasn’t merely money.
It was the final evidence against every person involved.
Charles had never been able to access it.
Because the trust required Daniel and Sophia.
Charles was finished.
The agents took him away.
Sophia exhaled.
For the first time in decades, her family wasn’t running.
Daniel looked at her.
“Are you okay?”
She smiled.
“I think so.”
Lily ran toward them.
“Daddy!”
Daniel hugged her.
Sophia watched.
And something inside her changed.
She had spent her life protecting her company.
Now she wanted something else.
A family.
