Single Dad Stopped to Help a Struggling Old Man… Then He Met the Daughter Who Changed His Life

Chapter 12

The house was renovated over six months.

Lily picked paint colors.

Arthur planted flowers.

Daniel repaired the porch.

Sophia tried to help.

She was terrible with tools.

“That’s upside down.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

She laughed.

Their lives became ordinary.

And ordinary became precious.

One evening, Daniel returned from work to find Lily sitting at the kitchen table.

“Daddy.”

“Yes?”

“Can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

“Is Sophia staying forever?”

Daniel paused.

“I hope so.”

Lily smiled.

“Good.”

Then she ran away.

Sophia walked into the room.

“Did she ask you that?”

“Yes.”

“What did you say?”

“I told her I hoped so.”

Sophia smiled.

“That’s a dangerous answer.”

“Why?”

“Because now I have to make it true.”

She kissed him.

Then her phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

Daniel watched.

She listened.

“Are you sure?”

Another pause.

“Send it to me.”

She hung up.

“What happened?”

“There was an old account.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“The Blackwood Account?”

“No.”

“A second account.”

“What kind?”

“A private trust under Charles’s name.”

Daniel frowned.

“Still active?”

“Yes.”

“Then what?”

Sophia opened the email.

The trust had one beneficiary.

Lily Brooks.

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Sophia looked at him.

“It was created the day Lily was born.”

“By who?”

The document listed the founder.

Richard Bennett.

Sophia’s father.

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“Why would he create a trust for Lily?”

“I don’t know.”

They investigated.

The trust contained no money.

Only documents.

A single letter.

Sophia opened it.

My granddaughter,

Her eyes filled.

If you are reading this, the danger has passed.

Your grandfather couldn’t protect his own children from every shadow.

But Daniel and Sophia can protect you together.

Daniel stared.

The final line said:

The greatest thing they will ever inherit is each other.

Sophia laughed through tears.

“This man planned everything.”

Daniel smiled.

“Apparently.”

But the letter contained one more page.

A final warning.

Do not trust the person who arrives after my death claiming to know what happened.

Daniel frowned.

“Who would that be?”

Sophia looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

Three days later, a man arrived at Bennett Holdings.

He claimed to be a former partner of Arthur’s.

His name was Victor Shaw.

He brought documents.

Claims.

Evidence.

And a story about what Charles had done.

Something about it felt wrong.

Daniel recognized one signature.

It didn’t match.

He looked at Sophia.

“We need to investigate him.”

She nodded.

The peaceful life they had built was about to be tested again.
