Two years later, Sophia closed her office early.
Daniel was waiting outside the building.
She walked toward him.
“No dinner meeting?”
“No.”
“Miracle.”
She smiled.
“What are we doing?”
“Going somewhere.”
“Where?”
“You’ll see.”
He drove her to the roadside where everything had started.
The same highway.
The same stretch of road.
The rain had returned.
Sophia looked around.
“This is where you met Dad.”
“Yes.”
He pulled over.
Sophia stared at the spot where the old car had once been.
“What are we doing here?”
Daniel reached into the glove box.
He pulled out a small box.
Sophia’s eyes widened.
“Daniel.”
He smiled.
“I know we already have a home.”
She laughed nervously.
“And a daughter.”
“Yes.”
“And a life.”
“Exactly.”
He opened the box.
Inside was a ring.
“Then what is this?”
“I’ve been waiting.”
“For what?”
“For the right place.”
He took her hand.
“I don’t want to promise you a perfect life.”
She smiled through tears.
“Good.”
“I want to promise you an honest one.”
He continued.
“I want to wake up beside you.”
“Fight with you.”
“Laugh with you.”
“Grow old with you.”
Sophia covered her mouth.
“And I want Lily to know that love isn’t something you hide when you’re afraid.”
He knelt.
“Sophia Bennett, will you marry me?”
She laughed and cried at the same time.
“Yes.”
He stood.
She kissed him.
Rain began falling harder.
They stayed there anyway.
Two people who had once met because a stranger needed help.
Now building a life together.
On the drive home, Sophia looked at him.
“You know what I remember most?”
“What?”
“That you didn’t ask Dad whether he could pay you.”
Daniel laughed.
“He looked like he couldn’t.”
She smiled.
“You just stopped.”
“Yeah.”
She took his hand.
“That’s why I love you.”
He smiled.
“I love you too.”
When they arrived home, Lily was waiting.
She saw the ring.
Her mouth dropped open.
“You did it!”
Daniel laughed.
“You knew?”
“I helped choose the ring.”
Sophia looked shocked.
“You did?”
Lily nodded proudly.
“You’re terrible at surprises.”
Daniel sighed.
“I’ve created a monster.”
Arthur appeared behind them.
“My granddaughter has good instincts.”
Sophia laughed.
“I think I’m surrounded.”
Daniel wrapped his arms around both of them.
“Yes.”
And for once, he didn’t mind.
