Single Dad Stopped to Help a Struggling Old Man… Then He Met the Daughter Who Changed His Life

Chapter 6

They escaped through a tunnel beneath the bank.

The exit led to an old subway maintenance room.

For the first time, they stopped.

Arthur sat against the wall, exhausted.

Sophia crouched beside him.

“Dad.”

“I’m fine.”

“You could have been killed.”

“I’ve survived worse.”

Daniel looked at the evidence box.

“We need somewhere safe.”

Sophia nodded.

“There is one place.”

Her childhood home.

An abandoned lakeside cabin.

They drove there before dawn.

Inside, everything was covered in dust.

Photographs remained on the walls.

Sophia as a child.

Arthur and his wife.

Daniel’s father.

Daniel stared at one picture.

His father was holding a little girl.

Sophia.

“You knew her then.”

Arthur nodded.

“Your father visited often.”

Daniel smiled sadly.

“I didn’t know.”

“You were eight.”

Sophia looked at him.

“Your father loved children.”

Daniel glanced at her.

“He never talked about you.”

“He was trying to protect you.”

They spent the morning reviewing the evidence.

The missing money had passed through dozens of companies.

But there was one final account.

A private trust controlled by Charles.

Its balance was enormous.

More than $300 million.

Daniel stared.

“That’s what he stole.”

Arthur nodded.

“But there’s something else.”

“What?”

“The company.”

Daniel looked confused.

“The original Bennett Holdings shares.”

Sophia frowned.

“What about them?”

“Charles owns enough through shell companies to take control.”

Daniel looked at her.

“When?”

“Tomorrow.”

Sophia went pale.

“The board meeting.”

“Yes.”

“He’ll take the company.”

“And probably everything tied to it.”

Daniel closed the folder.

“Then we stop him.”

Sophia stared.

“You don’t have to.”

“I know.”

“Why are you doing this?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because your father stopped for my father.”

Arthur smiled.

Sophia looked away.

There was something else in the room.

Something between them.

Not love.

Not yet.

Something beginning.

That afternoon, Sophia prepared a plan.

They would expose Charles during the board meeting.

The evidence would be released simultaneously to federal investigators.

But they needed one thing.

Proof that Charles was still alive.

“Without that,” Sophia said, “he’ll claim the records are fabricated.”

Daniel looked at the recent photograph.

“We need to find him.”

They traced the money.

A location appeared.

A private property outside the city.

Sophia stared.

“I know this place.”

“What is it?”

“My uncle’s old estate.”

“Then let’s go.”

They arrived after dark.

The house was empty.

But someone had been there recently.

A suitcase.

Fresh food.

A phone.

Then Sophia found a photograph.

Her mother.

Taken after her supposed death.

She stared at it.

“My mother.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“She’s alive?”

Sophia shook.

“No.”

“Then when was this?”

She turned the photograph.

A date.

Two years after her mother’s funeral.

Sophia’s knees nearly gave out.

Arthur picked up the photo.

His face collapsed.

“I thought she was gone.”

The photograph revealed the final secret.

Someone had been hiding Sophia’s mother.

And beside her stood Charles.

Alive.
