Single Dad Stopped to Help a Struggling Old Man… Then He Met the Daughter Who Changed His Life

Chapter 7

Sophia spent the night staring at the photograph.

Her mother had died when she was seventeen.

At least, that was what she had been told.

A sudden illness.

A funeral.

A closed casket.

A burial.

Now there was proof that none of it had been true.

“Why would my father lie about this?” she asked.

Arthur looked devastated.

“I thought she was dead.”

“Then who was buried?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel picked up the photo.

“We find out.”

They contacted an old family doctor.

He agreed to meet privately.

When Sophia showed him the photograph, the doctor went silent.

Finally he said,

“Your mother was alive.”

Sophia covered her mouth.

“What happened?”

“She wanted to leave.”

“Why?”

“Because she discovered what Charles was doing.”

“Charles?”

The doctor nodded.

“Your mother tried to expose him.”

Arthur stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Charles threatened my family.”

Sophia looked devastated.

“Where did she go?”

“Paris.”

Daniel looked at the doctor.

“Is she still alive?”

He hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

They searched.

A record appeared.

Her mother had been living under another name.

Then another record.

A private hospital.

Two years ago.

Sophia stared.

“She’s alive.”

Daniel reached for her hand.

She took it.

“Thank you.”

He smiled.

They flew to Paris.

The woman they found was older.

Frailer.

But Sophia knew immediately.

“Mom?”

The woman looked up.

Her eyes widened.

“Sophia.”

Sophia ran to her.

They held each other and cried.

Arthur stood in the doorway.

He couldn’t move.

His wife looked at him.

“I thought you were dead.”

“So did I.”

She smiled sadly.

“Charles made everyone believe it.”

She explained the truth.

Charles had arranged the fake death.

He wanted access to the company.

He threatened Arthur.

He threatened Daniel’s father.

And he used Sophia’s mother as leverage.

“Your father tried to protect you,” she told Sophia.

“But he failed.”

“He survived.”

“Because of Daniel’s father.”

Daniel looked down.

Her mother turned toward him.

“You are his son.”

“Yes.”

“Then your father succeeded.”

She reached for his hand.

“He wanted you to know that.”

Daniel felt tears in his eyes.

Before they left, Sophia’s mother gave them a small envelope.

“Your father hid this.”

Inside was a memory card.

A recording.

Daniel’s father.

He looked younger.

Fear filled his eyes.

“I couldn’t stop them,” he said.

“But if you’re watching this, I need you to trust Arthur.”

Then he named the person responsible.

“Charles Bennett.”

The recording ended.

Sophia closed her eyes.

The truth had finally become complete.

But there was one problem.

Charles knew where they were.

Her phone buzzed.

A message.

You found her.

Another.

Now come home.

Then a photograph appeared.

Daniel’s house.

Lily was standing outside school.

And a man was watching her.

Sophia’s blood ran cold.

Charles had found Daniel’s daughter.
