She Whispered “I Have Nowhere Left to Go”… His Answer Changed Her Life
Chapter 5
The man arrested outside Daniel’s headquarters refused to speak.
His name was Marcus Vale.
Former private investigator.
Former employee of Dalton & Pierce.
Daniel’s security team discovered he had been hired through a shell company.
The trail led back to Jonathan Pierce.
Sarah couldn’t believe it.
“He followed me?”
Daniel nodded.
“Why?”
“Because you know something he doesn’t want public.”
Sarah looked at the evidence.
“I thought the financial records were the end.”
“No.”
Daniel pointed toward the East Harbor documents.
“It’s only the beginning.”
The shell companies weren’t just manipulating land values.
They were moving money through several real estate developments.
East Harbor was one of six.
The total amount involved was over seventy million dollars.
Sarah stared.
“Why would my boss risk this?”
“Because he probably thought nobody would ever connect the companies.”
“And now?”
“Now they have a problem.”
She looked at him.
“You.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Apparently.”
That week, Daniel’s legal team prepared a confidential report for federal investigators.
Sarah agreed to testify.
But before she could, her mother disappeared.
Sarah received a call at 2:17 p.m.
“We have your mother.”
Sarah froze.
The voice was distorted.
“Who is this?”
“You know.”
“What do you want?”
“Your documents.”
“What documents?”
“The East Harbor file.”
Sarah’s hands shook.
“I don’t have them.”
“You know where they are.”
The call ended.
Sarah looked at Daniel.
“My mother.”
Daniel stood immediately.
“Where?”
“We don’t know.”
He contacted the police.
Then he turned to Sarah.
“Listen to me.”
“What?”
“You’re not going anywhere alone.”
“I need to find her.”
“We will.”
“We?”
Daniel nodded.
“You’re not doing this by yourself.”
They searched every location connected to Sarah’s mother.
Hospitals.
Friends.
Pharmacies.
Finally, they found her car abandoned outside an old motel.
The room was empty.
On the bed was a photograph of Sarah and Sophie.
On the back were four words.
You have forty-eight hours.
Sarah broke down.
“This is my fault.”
Daniel crouched beside her.
“No.”
“They’re doing this because of me.”
“No.”
“I should never have come here.”
Daniel looked directly into her eyes.
“Stop blaming yourself for what other people choose to do.”
She cried.
“I don’t know how to fix this.”
“You don’t have to.”
“I have to.”
He reached for her hand.
“We fix it together.”
That moment changed something between them.
Not because of romance.
Not yet.
Because trust was beginning.
The kind built when someone stays beside you when everything else is falling apart.
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“They want the file.”
Sarah nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then we give them a file.”
She stared at him.
“What?”
“A fake one.”
