She Whispered “I Have Nowhere Left to Go”… His Answer Changed Her Life
Chapter 6
The plan was dangerous.
Daniel’s lawyers created a false document containing fabricated information.
It suggested the evidence had been moved to a private storage facility.
The goal was to see who would try to retrieve it.
Sarah hated the idea.
“What if they hurt my mother?”
“They already have her.”
Daniel looked at her.
“This is our chance to find them.”
They sent the false document through an encrypted channel.
Then they waited.
Three hours later, the fake file was opened.
From an anonymous device.
The device was traced.
An address.
A warehouse near East Harbor.
Daniel’s security team surrounded the building with police.
Inside, they found Sarah’s mother.
Alive.
Weak.
But alive.
Sarah ran to her.
“Mom!”
Her mother hugged her.
“I knew you’d come.”
Sarah cried.
“I thought I lost you.”
“No.”
Her mother looked over Sarah’s shoulder.
Daniel stood by the doorway.
“Who is he?”
Sarah wiped her tears.
“Someone helping us.”
Her mother studied him.
Then smiled.
“I can tell.”
Later, police arrested three men.
But Jonathan Pierce wasn’t among them.
He had disappeared.
The investigation revealed he had already transferred millions of dollars overseas.
The East Harbor scheme had been running for years.
And Sarah had unknowingly been one of the only people who had seen the original records.
When she returned to Daniel’s house, she sat quietly at the kitchen table.
Daniel placed tea in front of her.
“My mother is safe.”
“Yes.”
“The men are arrested.”
“Yes.”
“Why don’t I feel relieved?”
“Because Jonathan is still free.”
Sarah nodded.
She looked exhausted.
Daniel sat across from her.
“You should sleep.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
She looked at him.
“Because every time I close my eyes, I see myself getting fired.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
“Because that was the moment everything fell apart.”
“No.”
“What?”
“That wasn’t the moment.”
He leaned forward.
“That was the moment you found out you were stronger than you thought.”
Sarah stared at him.
“I don’t feel strong.”
“You don’t have to feel strong to be strong.”
She looked down.
“Do you ever get scared?”
“All the time.”
“You don’t act like it.”
“That’s because I’ve learned something.”
“What?”
“Courage isn’t the absence of fear.”
He paused.
“It’s deciding something matters more.”
Sarah smiled weakly.
“What matters more to you?”
Daniel looked at her.
“You.”
She froze.
He seemed almost surprised by his own answer.
For a long moment, neither moved.
Then Sophie entered the kitchen.
“Mom?”
Sarah turned immediately.
“Yes?”
Sophie walked toward them.
“Can we have ice cream?”
Daniel laughed.
Sarah smiled through her tears.
“Of course.”
The moment passed.
But neither Daniel nor Sarah forgot what had almost been said.
