She Whispered “I Have Nowhere Left to Go”… His Answer Changed Her Life
Chapter 4
Daniel canceled the East Harbor deal immediately.
His board was furious.
The investors were worse.
“You’re walking away from three hundred million dollars?”
Daniel stood at the end of the conference table.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I won’t buy something based on manipulated information.”
One investor slammed his folder down.
“You’re risking the company.”
Daniel remained calm.
“Then maybe the company needs a different leader.”
Nobody answered.
After the meeting, Daniel returned home.
Sarah was waiting.
“You canceled the deal?”
“Yes.”
“Because of me?”
“Because of the truth.”
She looked down.
“You shouldn’t lose money because of my problem.”
Daniel shook his head.
“This stopped being your problem.”
Before she could answer, Sophie came running down the stairs.
“Mom!”
Sarah turned.
“What happened?”
“Sophie lost a tooth.”
She held up the tiny tooth proudly.
Daniel smiled.
“That’s worth money.”
“Really?”
“How much do you think?”
Sophie thought.
“Twenty dollars.”
Daniel laughed.
“That’s aggressive negotiation.”
Sophie grinned.
Sarah watched them.
Something about the scene felt impossible.
A few days earlier, she had feared sleeping in her car.
Now her daughter was laughing in a billionaire’s kitchen.
She couldn’t understand how her life had changed so quickly.
But she also feared it could disappear just as quickly.
That night, Daniel found Sarah in the garden.
“You haven’t eaten.”
“I’m not hungry.”
“You’re lying.”
She smiled.
“You notice everything.”
“Occupational hazard.”
They stood quietly.
Sarah finally asked,
“Why are you really helping me?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Because you once helped my father.”
“That was years ago.”
“I remember.”
Sarah shook her head.
“I didn’t do anything special.”
“You did.”
He paused.
“You made him feel human when everyone else treated him like a problem.”
Sarah looked away.
Daniel continued.
“People underestimate how much that matters.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel.”
“Yeah?”
“I don’t know how to accept kindness.”
He smiled.
“Practice.”
She laughed softly.
Then his phone rang again.
This time, the caller was the police.
A man had been arrested near Daniel’s company headquarters.
He had been carrying Sarah’s photograph.
And a list of addresses.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What addresses?”
The officer read them.
Sarah’s former apartment.
Her mother’s house.
The school Sophie attended.
And Daniel’s home.
Sarah’s face went pale.
Someone wasn’t just watching her.
They were getting closer.
Daniel immediately arranged private security.
Sarah protested.
“I don’t want to become your responsibility.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You’re not.”
“What am I then?”
He held her gaze.
“Someone I care about.”
Neither of them spoke.
The words were simple.
But they changed the air between them.
