The legal case finally reached court.
Jonathan Pierce was arrested after months in hiding.
The evidence against him was overwhelming.
He had manipulated financial reports.
Bribed vendors.
Threatened employees.
And orchestrated the East Harbor scheme.
Sarah testified.
So did Olivia.
So did several former employees.
Daniel sat behind Sarah the entire time.
When she finished, she walked out of the courtroom shaking.
Daniel met her in the hallway.
“You okay?”
“I think so.”
“You were incredible.”
She laughed softly.
“Stop saying that.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m going to start believing you.”
“Good.”
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.
One journalist shouted,
“Ms. Mitchell, are you now an executive at Brooks Logistics?”
Sarah stopped.
Daniel looked at her.
She turned to the reporters.
“Yes.”
“Did Mr. Brooks hire you because of your relationship?”
Sarah smiled.
“No.”
“He hired me because I was qualified.”
Daniel added,
“And because she’s better at my job than I am.”
The reporters laughed.
Sarah looked at him.
“You’re impossible.”
“Probably.”
That evening, they celebrated quietly.
Sophie made a handmade sign.
WELCOME HOME, MOM.
Sarah cried.
Daniel hugged her.
The three of them stood together in the kitchen.
For Sarah, it felt like the first time in years that the word home meant something more than a building.
Later that night, she found Daniel outside.
“Why did you help us that first night?”
He looked at her.
“You asked.”
“That simple?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“No one else would have.”
“I can’t answer for everyone else.”
She stepped closer.
“I know.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I would do it again.”
“Even knowing everything that would happen?”
“Especially knowing.”
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
Then she kissed him.
It was quiet.
Careful.
Almost hesitant.
But Daniel kissed her back.
When they separated, Sarah smiled.
“So much for keeping things simple.”
Daniel laughed.
“We were never simple.”
