And long walks by the lake.
Sarah still kept the original coat she had worn the night she arrived at Daniel’s house.
It hung in the back of a closet.
One rainy evening, she found it.
Daniel walked in.
“You still have that?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
She touched the sleeve.
“Because this is where everything began.”
He smiled.
“You were soaked.”
“I was terrified.”
“I know.”
“I almost drove away.”
“I’m glad you didn’t.”
She looked at him.

That night, Sarah received a message from her old company.
The board had reached out.
They wanted her to return as an independent advisor.
She almost laughed.
The same people who had fired her now wanted her expertise.
Daniel looked over her shoulder.
“Are you interested?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I already built something better.”
She looked at him.
“Here.”
Daniel smiled.
“You mean the company?”
Sarah shook her head.
“No.”
She touched his hand.

The next day, Sarah declined the offer.
She stayed at Brooks Logistics.
But not because Daniel asked her to.
Because she wanted to.

Sophie, meanwhile, had started asking questions about her biological father.
Sarah had always avoided the subject.
She finally decided it was time.
“He left when you were little.”
“Why?”
“He wasn’t ready to be a father.”
“Does he know about me?”

“Does he want to meet me?”
Sarah hesitated.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel sat nearby.

“What would you do?”
Daniel answered honestly.
“I’d let you decide.”
Sophie thought about it.
Then she shook her head.
“I don’t need him.”
Sarah looked at her daughter.
