She Overheard His Secret Divorce Plot—Then Emptied Every Account Before Dawn

Chapter 6

The emergency shareholder meeting was scheduled for noon.

Emma arrived at 11:15.

She walked into the building she had spent twelve years believing was partly her husband’s.

Now she knew the truth.

It had always been her family’s.

Employees watched her carefully.

Rumors had already spread.

Daniel was on the top floor.

Richard Hale was with him.

So was the board.

Emma entered the conference room.

Daniel looked up.

“You’re early.”

Emma smiled.

“I like to be.”

Richard stood.

“Emma, this is a private meeting.”

She looked at him.

“I own forty-eight percent.”

The room went silent.

Richard’s smile vanished.

“That’s disputed.”

“The original shareholder agreement says otherwise.”

She placed the document on the table.

Richard looked at it.

Daniel did too.

His face changed.

“You found it.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Where you hoped I’d never look.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Richard stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.”

Emma pointed at the documents.

“Then explain the asset transfers.”

No one spoke.

She continued.

“The offshore accounts.”

“The shell companies.”

“The fake psychiatric report.”

“The properties.”

Richard looked at Daniel.

“You said she didn’t know.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn’t know she would find the trust.”

Emma stared.

He was already distancing himself.

Richard whispered,

“Then we have a problem.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You do.”

Emma turned.

“Daniel.”

He looked back.

“What?”

“Did you ever love me?”

Silence.

It was the first question he couldn’t answer with money.

Daniel looked down.

“I did.”

“But?”

He swallowed.

“I thought I was protecting us.”

“From what?”

“Your father.”

Emma froze.

“What?”

Daniel revealed that her father had discovered Richard Hale’s fraud years earlier.

He had hidden evidence.

Richard had threatened him.

Daniel believed the only way to keep Emma and Lily safe was to take control of the family’s assets.

“Then why deceive me?”

“Because if you knew, they would use you.”

Emma shook her head.

“Who are ‘they’?”

Daniel looked toward Richard.

Richard stepped backward.

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Not him.”

Emma stared.

“Then who?”

Daniel took out a file.

“Your father’s real killer.”

He opened it.

A name.

Martin Harrison.

Emma’s uncle.

She hadn’t seen him in fifteen years.

She thought he lived abroad.

Daniel said:

“Martin created the network that stole from your father.”

“Richard helped him.”

“Your father found out.”

“Then they killed him.”

Emma stared.

“And you?”

“I was supposed to expose them.”

“What happened?”

“I realized they were watching Lily.”

She looked at her daughter.

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“I made a choice.”

“What choice?”

“I stayed silent.”

Emma felt tears burn.

“You let me believe my father died in an accident.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe our company was yours.”

“Yes.”

“You planned to divorce me.”

Daniel looked away.

“Yes.”

She nodded slowly.

“Then you don’t get to call that protection.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know.”

Richard suddenly stood.

“This conversation is over.”

Emma looked at him.

“No.”

She lifted her phone.

“I sent the documents to federal investigators.”

The room froze.

Richard stared.

“You wouldn’t.”

“I already did.”

He stepped toward her.

“Do you understand what you’re doing?”

“Yes.”

“I can destroy you.”

Emma smiled.

“No.”

She looked at Daniel.

“He already did.”

Security entered the room.

Then federal agents.

Richard’s face went white.

Daniel stood still.

One agent approached him.

“Mr. Brooks, you’re not under arrest.”

Emma looked surprised.

The agent continued:

“We need your cooperation.”

Daniel nodded.

“I’ll cooperate.”

Richard shouted,

“You said you’d protect me!”

Daniel looked at him.

“I protected you long enough.”

Then he turned to Emma.

“I’m sorry.”

She looked at him.

“For everything?”

He nodded.

She said nothing.

Because there was still one final truth.

Her father hadn’t been killed for money.

He had been killed because he hid something.

Something Richard and Martin still desperately wanted.
