She called Daniel.
“Can you help?”

He had signed away every remaining claim.
Emma stared.
“You didn’t have to.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
“Because it was never mine.”
She looked at him.
“It was your family’s.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“It was yours.”
Emma closed the envelope.
“I appreciate it.”
“Good.”
He turned to leave.
She stopped him.
“Daniel.”
He looked back.
“I think I’m ready.”
“For what?”
She hesitated.
“To forgive you.”
His expression changed.

“Thank you.”
“But that doesn’t mean we’re going back.”
“I know.”
She smiled.
“Good.”
Then Lily appeared from behind the door.
“You guys took forever!”
They both laughed.
