She Overheard His Secret Divorce Plot—Then Emptied Every Account Before Dawn

Chapter 5

Ethan sat down.

Emma remained standing.

“What ownership records?”

“Your father’s company.”

“My father died twelve years ago.”

“Exactly.”

Ethan explained.

Their father had discovered massive financial fraud just before his death.

He believed someone inside the company was stealing money.

Daniel had been hired to investigate.

Ethan, who was working as a junior analyst at the time, helped him.

“The records disappeared after your father died,” Ethan said.

Emma stared.

“You said you helped Daniel.”

“I did.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel claimed he was protecting the family.”

Emma felt sick.

“So Daniel’s been hiding things from us since before we married.”

“Yes.”

“What did you hide?”

Ethan hesitated.

“I moved the original shareholder ledger.”

“Where?”

“Into a private trust.”

“Whose name?”

Emma waited.

“Yours.”

She sat down.

“Mine?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your father believed you were the rightful successor.”

Emma looked at him.

“Then why does Daniel control everything?”

“Because your father trusted him.”

She closed her eyes.

The betrayal was older than she had imagined.

The divorce plot was only the newest layer.

Her husband had spent twelve years controlling assets that were legally tied to her.

Her brother had helped.

Her father had known.

And somewhere underneath all of it was a secret nobody had told her.

“What happened to my father?”

Ethan looked down.

“He was murdered.”

Emma stared.

She had been told he died in a car crash.

“Who killed him?”

“We don’t know.”

“But Daniel does.”

“Maybe.”

Emma’s phone buzzed.

A message from Marcus.

Daniel told me you were moving against him. We need to meet.

Emma showed Ethan.

“He’s worried.”

“No.”

Ethan looked at the screen.

“He’s buying time.”

They agreed to meet.

Marcus arrived at a private café.

He sat across from Emma.

She didn’t order anything.

“Tell me the truth.”

Marcus looked nervous.

“About what?”

“Everything.”

He sighed.

“Daniel didn’t tell me you heard.”

“He didn’t have to.”

Marcus looked around.

Then lowered his voice.

“Daniel wants out.”

“Out of what?”

“The company.”

Emma frowned.

“He owns the company.”

“Not really.”

“What does that mean?”

Marcus looked at Ethan.

“You should hear this.”

Ethan nodded.

Marcus continued.

“Your father created a hidden succession structure.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew the company was being infiltrated.”

“By whom?”

Marcus hesitated.

“People connected to the board.”

Emma frowned.

“Who?”

“Richard Hale.”

She recognized the name.

Chairman of their largest investor.

A man Daniel had worked closely with for years.

Marcus continued.

“Richard was supposed to help Daniel transition the assets.”

“Instead?”

“He wanted them.”

Emma stared.

“Then why divorce me?”

“Because Daniel needed full legal control.”

“And if I refused?”

“Then he would claim you were financially incompetent.”

Emma’s heart sank.

“What?”

Marcus nodded.

“Your medical records.”

“I have none.”

“Exactly.”

He showed her a file.

Someone had created a false psychiatric evaluation.

It claimed Emma suffered from severe anxiety and impaired judgment.

Emma couldn’t believe it.

“This is fake.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you help?”

Marcus looked ashamed.

“Because Daniel threatened my family.”

Ethan leaned forward.

“Who is behind him?”

Marcus swallowed.

“Richard Hale.”

Silence.

Emma finally understood.

The divorce wasn’t the end goal.

It was the mechanism.

Richard wanted control of the company.

Daniel was the front.

Emma was the obstacle.

Lily was the inheritance.

And the money was only part of it.

“What does Richard want?”

Marcus answered:

“The trust.”

“What trust?”

“The original family trust.”

Emma went still.

The one her father created.

The one Ethan had hidden.

The one that contained the controlling shares.

Marcus looked at her.

“Before dawn, Daniel will try to make you sign away your rights.”

Emma shook her head.

“He won’t.”

Marcus looked worried.

“Then he’ll destroy the company.”

Emma stood.

“Not if I get there first.”
