She Overheard His Secret Divorce Plot—Then Emptied Every Account Before Dawn

Chapter 4

At 7:22 a.m., Emma opened the emergency investment account her mother had created before she died.

It held $9.8 million.

She had never touched it.

Not once.

Her mother had told her:

Keep this for the day you have to protect yourself.

Emma had always assumed that day would involve illness or an accident.

Not her husband.

She transferred the money into a protected trust.

Then she stopped.

Something felt wrong.

If she moved everything, Daniel could claim she had stolen marital assets.

She needed proof.

She called the family attorney.

“Before I transfer anything else, I need legal documentation.”

“That’s wise.”

“I’m not trying to hide money.”

“I know.”

“I’m trying to stop him from taking it.”

“Then document every transaction.”

Emma did.

Every transfer.

Every account balance.

Every suspicious payment from Daniel.

Every message.

Every file.

Then Ethan noticed something.

“Look at this.”

He showed her a property transfer.

A beach house.

Their beach house.

Daniel had transferred ownership to a company six months earlier.

The company belonged to Marcus Reed.

Emma stared.

“He told me it was still ours.”

Ethan shook his head.

“It never was.”

She felt sick.

How many times had he lied?

She searched deeper.

They found a second property.

A third.

An apartment in New York.

A warehouse.

Two cars.

Even the family vacation home.

Every major asset had slowly been moved into companies controlled by Daniel or Marcus.

Emma leaned back.

“He wasn’t preparing for divorce.”

“He was liquidating the marriage.”

Her phone rang.

Daniel.

She answered.

“Where are you?”

“I’m almost home.”

“You sound angry.”

“I’m tired.”

“Emma…”

“Yes?”

“Why are you moving money?”

She looked at Ethan.

“I had to.”

“You’re making a mistake.”

“Am I?”

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

“I understand more than you think.”

Silence.

Then Daniel said quietly,

“Who is with you?”

Emma’s blood ran cold.

“Why?”

“I can hear someone.”

She hung up.

Ethan looked at her.

“He knows I’m here.”

“Does he know everything?”

“I don’t think so.”

The front door opened.

Daniel entered.

He looked calm.

Too calm.

He placed his briefcase down.

Then looked at Emma.

“You moved money.”

“Yes.”

“From our joint accounts.”

“Yes.”

“Without telling me.”

She stared.

“You were planning to do the same.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“Who told you that?”

“I heard you.”

His eyes narrowed.

“How much did you hear?”

“Enough.”

He looked toward Ethan.

“You brought him here.”

“He came to help me.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Emma stood.

“You were going to divorce me.”

“I was.”

“Take everything.”

“I wasn’t going to take everything.”

“Then why did you move the properties?”

He didn’t answer.

Emma held up the documents.

“Why did you transfer our homes?”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Because you don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Then explain.”

He stepped closer.

“You think this is about money.”

“What is it about?”

“Protection.”

Emma laughed.

“You keep using that word.”

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Ethan stood.

“Too late.”

Daniel’s eyes turned cold.

“You’ve always hated me.”

“I’ve never trusted you.”

Daniel looked back at Emma.

“You’re making a mistake.”

“Maybe.”

He picked up his briefcase.

“You’ll regret this.”

Emma watched him walk toward the door.

Then he stopped.

Without turning, he said:

“You should ask your brother what he did twelve years ago.”

Ethan’s face went pale.

Emma turned.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel left.

The door closed.

Emma stared at Ethan.

“What is he talking about?”

Ethan said nothing.

“Tell me.”

“I was hoping you would never have to know.”

“Know what?”

Ethan looked away.

“Twelve years ago, I helped Daniel save the company.”

Emma froze.

“Why?”

“Because your father asked me.”

“And?”

Ethan sighed.

“I helped him hide something.”

Emma’s heart sank.

“What?”

“The original ownership records.”
