She Laughed at His $500 Bid—Then the Auctioneer Said, “The Factory Is His.”

Chapter 1

The auctioneer’s hammer was already coming down when she laughed.

“Five hundred dollars?” Vivian Mercer said, loud enough for the people behind her to hear. “For that?”

The man at the front table didn’t turn around.

He simply raised his paddle again.

“Five hundred.”

The room smelled of old paper, floor polish, and the bitter coffee someone had abandoned near the registration desk. Beyond the tall windows, rain dragged silver lines down the glass. Inside, forty-three people watched the final assets of Mercer Industrial Works being sold one piece at a time.

Machines.

Office furniture.

Forklifts.

Tools.

Everything that had once belonged to the factory Vivian’s father had built was being reduced to numbers on a sheet.

And now this stranger wanted the last item on the list.

The factory itself.

Vivian folded her arms.

“Go ahead,” she whispered. “Let him waste his money.”

The auctioneer looked at the man’s paddle.

“Five hundred dollars.”

Someone snickered.

Another bidder shook his head.

The building had once employed three hundred people. Now the roof leaked, half the machinery had been stripped, and the company owed more money than the property was supposedly worth.

Five hundred dollars was ridiculous.

The auctioneer lifted his hammer.

“Any other bids?”

Silence.

Vivian smiled.

Then the auctioneer looked toward the man and said something that erased the smile from her face.

“Mr. Cole, congratulations. The factory is yours.”

Vivian’s chair scraped violently against the floor.

“What?”

The auctioneer lowered the hammer.

“Mercer Industrial Works has been transferred according to the terms of the estate.”

Vivian stared at the stranger.

He finally turned.

He was younger than she expected. Dark coat. Rain still shining on his shoulders. No expensive watch. No lawyer standing beside him.

Just a battered leather folder beneath one arm.

And eyes that seemed strangely familiar.

Vivian’s mouth went dry.

“Who are you?”

The man said nothing.

The auctioneer did.

“His name is Ethan Cole.”

Then Ethan opened the leather folder.

And Vivian saw her father’s signature.
