The apartment she had been renting was already leased to someone else.

She had nowhere to go.

James found her sitting on a bench outside the building with two suitcases.

“What happened?”

Tina looked at him.

“Can I stay with you?”

James blinked.

“For how long?”

“Until I figure things out.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

She expected him to make a joke.

He didn’t.

His apartment was small but comfortable.

James gave her the bedroom.

He slept on the couch.

The next morning, Tina found coffee waiting for her.

She stared at it.

“What?”

“You made coffee?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

James looked confused.

“Because you drink coffee.”

Tina smiled.

“Since when are you nice?”

“Don’t spread rumors.”

For the first time since Cole left her, Tina laughed.

It was small.
