James found her crying.

He didn’t ask questions.

He simply sat beside her.

After a while, Tina whispered:

“I don’t understand why this keeps happening.”

James looked at her.

“You keep choosing men who don’t know what they want.”

“What if the problem is me?”

“It isn’t.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I’ve known you for years.”

Tina shook her head.

Later, she and Jane discussed the Kelly Hunter theory over drinks.

Tina laughed bitterly.

“I have to believe it.”

“Why?”

“Because the alternative is worse.”

“What alternative?”

Tina looked down.

“That maybe men don’t leave women.”

She swallowed.

“Maybe they just leave me.”
