Three weeks later, Cole gave Tina the answer she wanted.
“I love you.”
She stared at him.
“What?”
“I love you.”
Tina smiled.
For once, she allowed herself to believe everything would work out.
Cole told Amanda that their relationship was over.
Then he asked Tina to move in with him.
They spent an entire Saturday looking at apartments.
They found one with large windows, a tiny balcony and a kitchen that Tina immediately loved.
“This could be ours,” she whispered.
Cole smiled.
“It will be.”
They signed the paperwork.
Tina started packing.
For the first time in years, she imagined a future.
Then Cole changed.
He became distant.
He stopped answering quickly.
He worked late.
He avoided conversations.
Finally, Tina confronted him.
“What happened?”
Cole sat silently.
Then he said:
“My feelings changed.”
She stared at him.
“No.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You said you loved me.”
“I know.”
“You asked me to move in with you.”
“I know.”
“Then what changed?”
Cole looked away.
“I don’t know.”
But Tina knew something.
Whatever the reason was, she was the only one being left behind.
