Tina ran outside.
She found James walking down the sidewalk.
“James!”
He stopped.
She caught up to him.
“I was wrong.”
He looked at her.
“About what?”
“Everything.”
He smiled sadly.
“You’ll have to be more specific.”
Tina laughed through her tears.
“I thought you would eventually hurt me.”
“I never wanted to.”
“I know.”
“I thought you were just like the others.”
“I know.”
She took a breath.
“And I realized something.”
James waited.
“I love you.”
He didn’t move.
“Tina…”
“I love you.”
“You’re sure?”
She nodded.
“For the first time, I’m sure.”
James stepped closer.
“You don’t need a theory?”
“No.”
“You don’t need a magazine article?”
“No.”
“You don’t need Dr. Kelly Hunter?”
Tina smiled.
“She doesn’t exist.”
James laughed.
Then he kissed her.
And for once, Tina didn’t wonder how long it would last.
She simply let herself feel it.
