A year later, Emma was invited to a charity gala.

She arrived alone.

Daniel was supposed to meet her there.

When she entered, several people approached.

Executives.

Friends.

Then the room suddenly became quiet.

Daniel walked in.

He wore a black tuxedo.

Everyone recognized him.

The billionaire.

The man whose name appeared on financial magazines.

But Emma smiled.

She remembered him covered in grease.

Standing beside a broken car.

Refusing a hundred-dollar tip.

Daniel walked toward her.

“Sorry I’m late.”

She smiled.

“Ten minutes.”

“Traffic.”

“You own a helicopter.”

“I know.”

She laughed.

He offered his hand.

“Dance?”

“Yes.”

They moved across the floor.

A reporter approached.

“Mr. Carter, is this Emma Reynolds?”

Daniel looked at Emma.

Then smiled.

“Yes.”

“Are you two together?”

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

He looked at Emma.

She nodded.

“Yes.”

The reporter smiled.

“How did you meet?”

Emma laughed.

“He fixed my car.”

The reporter looked surprised.

“A mechanic?”

Daniel smiled.

“Something like that.”

Emma leaned toward him.

“You’re still doing that.”

“Doing what?”

“Being mysterious.”

“I have a reputation.”

She laughed.

Later that night, Daniel took her outside.

The city lights stretched below them.

He reached into his pocket.

Emma looked at him.

“Daniel?”

He took out a small box.

Her breath caught.

“I’ve been thinking about something.”

She smiled.

“That’s dangerous.”

He laughed.

“I know.”

He opened the box.

Inside was a ring.

Emma covered her mouth.

“I don’t want to promise you a perfect life.”

She looked at him through tears.

“I don’t need one.”

“I don’t want you to love me because I’m wealthy.”

“I don’t.”

“I don’t want you to stay because of my name.”

“I won’t.”

“I want you to stay because I’m the man who fixed your car.”

She laughed through her tears.

“You were terrible at that proposal.”

“Probably.”

She looked at the ring.

Then at him.

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“Yes?”

“Yes.”
