She Hired a Poor Mechanic to Fix Her Car… Then Discovered He Was a Billionaire!
Chapter 6
Emma stared at the woman.
“Mr. Carter?”
Daniel said nothing.
The woman looked uncomfortable.
“I apologize.”
Emma turned toward Daniel.
“You’re Daniel Carter.”
“Yes.”
“Carter Industries?”
“Yes.”
She laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“You’re the billionaire.”
Daniel nodded.
Emma stepped back.
“How much?”
“What?”
“How much are you worth?”
“That’s not important.”
“It is to me.”
“Why?”
“Because you lied.”
Daniel’s expression softened.
“I never told you I was poor.”
“You let me think you were.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He took a breath.
“Because I wanted to be treated like a normal person.”
Emma shook her head.
“You could have told me.”
“I was afraid.”
“You?”
“Yes.”
“Of me?”
“Of what you’d become after knowing.”
Emma was silent.
Daniel continued.
“Every time people discover who I am, they change.”
She looked at him.
“I wouldn’t.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Maybe not.”
She turned away.
Daniel didn’t stop her.
That night, Emma sat in her apartment staring at the ceiling.
She thought about the garage.
The coffee.
The fifty dollars.
The way Daniel had refused her hundred-dollar bill.
Then she thought about the man in the SUV.
The business associate.
The mysterious watch.
Everything made sense now.
The next morning, Daniel received a message.
Your uncle’s garage has been searched.
He rushed there.
Someone had broken in.
Nothing valuable had been stolen.
Only one thing was missing.
The old financial ledger belonging to Daniel’s father.
Daniel stared at the empty cabinet.
That ledger contained records from the early years of Carter Industries.
It also contained evidence that could expose the competitor’s connection to Reynolds Development.
Emma arrived.
“You’re okay?”
Daniel nodded.
“What happened?”
“They were looking for something.”
“What?”
He told her.
She looked at the broken cabinet.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
Then Emma noticed something on the floor.
A small metal badge.
She picked it up.
“What’s this?”
Daniel examined it.
His face changed.
“It belongs to Victor Shaw.”
Emma’s heart sank.
“Then he knows about you.”
Daniel nodded.
“And he knows about the ledger.”
They looked at each other.
Suddenly, their investigation had become dangerous.
Not just professionally.
Personally.
