Chapter 5

Emma returned to the garage the next morning.

Daniel was outside drinking coffee.

“You again.”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“Car trouble?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I have questions.”

“That’s becoming a habit.”

She sat on an old tire.

“Who was the man yesterday?”

Daniel leaned against the truck.

“Michael.”

“What does he do?”

“Business.”

“What kind?”

Daniel smiled.

“Complicated.”

Emma narrowed her eyes.

“You’re avoiding me.”

“Yes.”

“At least you’re honest.”

He laughed.

She looked around.

“Why do you work here?”

“My uncle.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It is.”

“Why doesn’t he hire someone else?”

“Because I like fixing things.”

Emma smiled.

“You don’t look like someone who needs this job.”

Daniel studied her.

“You don’t look like someone who needs help fixing a car.”

“Fair.”

They sat quietly.

Then Emma said:

“Someone is sabotaging my company.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“I know.”

“How?”

He hesitated.

“I heard.”

“From who?”

“People.”

Emma sighed.

“You’re impossible.”

He smiled.

She stood.

“I need help.”

“With what?”

“Finding out who’s doing it.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Why me?”

“Because you notice things.”

“That could be dangerous.”

“I know.”

Daniel thought for a moment.

“Okay.”

Emma smiled.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“But there’s one condition.”

“What?”

“You stop treating me like a rich woman.”

She laughed.

“I’m not treating you like anything.”

“Good.”

They began investigating.

The first clue came from the project files.

Someone had accessed them late at night.

The login belonged to Victor Shaw.

Emma immediately suspected him.

But Daniel wasn’t convinced.

“Too obvious.”

“Why?”

“If Victor wanted to sabotage you, he wouldn’t use his own account.”

“Unless he was careless.”

“Possible.”

They followed the digital trail.

It led to an external consulting company.

The company had been paid by a competitor.

Emma looked at Daniel.

“That’s it.”

“Maybe.”

They kept digging.

Then they found something worse.

The consulting company had also made payments to someone inside Reynolds Development.

Emma’s stomach dropped.

“Who?”

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Richard Reynolds.”

Emma froze.

“My father?”

Daniel nodded.

She stood.

“No.”

The evidence was there.

Payments.

Transfers.

Meetings.

Her father had been receiving money from the competitor.

Emma felt betrayed.

“I need to talk to him.”

Daniel stopped her.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because if he’s involved, confronting him now could destroy the evidence.”

Emma looked at him.

“You’ve done this before.”

“What?”

“Investigations.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“Maybe.”

She stared.

“You’re definitely not just a mechanic.”

He looked at her.

“No.”

“Then what are you?”

Daniel hesitated.

Before he could answer, a black luxury sedan pulled into the garage.

A woman stepped out.

She looked directly at Daniel.

Then bowed slightly.

“Mr. Carter, the board meeting has been moved forward.”

Emma’s eyes widened.

Mr. Carter?

Daniel closed his eyes.

His secret was beginning to collapse.
