She Dragged an Old Tire From the Pond — Then Something Underwater Followed It

Chapter 5

Everyone turned.

No one was there.

Daniel shouted, “Show yourself!”

Silence.

Then reeds moved on the far side.

A man stepped out.

Older.

Thin.

Gray hair.

He held both hands away from his body.

“My name is Caleb Mercer.”

Daniel raised his weapon.

“Stay where you are.”

Caleb stopped.

Emma stared at him.

Something about his face felt familiar.

Not the eyes.

The scar.

A thin white line ran beneath his jaw.

Daniel slowly lowered his gun.

“Caleb?”

Caleb looked at him.

“You remember.”

“Everyone remembers.”

Caleb smiled sadly.

“Not everyone.”

Emma stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

Caleb’s eyes moved to her.

Then to Ryan.

“You’re David Carter’s children.”

“Yes.”

Caleb swallowed.

“Your father saved my life.”

Emma’s heart jumped.

“You know my father?”

“I knew him better than most.”

“What happened to him?”

Caleb looked toward the pond.

“He was murdered by fear long before his body died.”

Daniel frowned.

“Explain.”

Caleb shook his head.

“Not here.”

He reached into his coat and removed a folded paper.

“Your father told me that when the tire moved, you would finally be ready.”

Emma stared.

“Ready for what?”

“To hear the rest.”

Caleb handed her the paper.

It was a map.

A rough drawing of Bellwater Pond.

An X marked the eastern shore.

“There’s a tunnel beneath the old mill.”

Emma frowned.

“The mill was demolished.”

“The building was.”

Caleb pointed to the pond.

“The foundation remains.”

Daniel studied the map.

“What happened to Noah?”

Caleb looked at Emma.

“He survived.”

Emma’s breath caught.

“Where is he?”

Caleb hesitated.

“Closer than you think.”

Then a vehicle engine roared from the road.

Everyone turned.

A black SUV accelerated toward them.

Daniel shouted, “DOWN!”

The SUV crashed through the temporary barrier.

It headed directly for Caleb.

Caleb jumped aside.

The vehicle swerved and sped away.

Daniel ran toward the road.

But the SUV was gone.

Emma looked back at Caleb.

“You said Noah survived.”

Caleb nodded.

“His name isn’t Noah anymore.”

“Then what is it?”

Caleb’s expression changed.

“Eli.”

Emma frowned.

“Eli what?”

Caleb stared toward the farmhouse.

“Eli Carter.”

Ryan went completely still.

Emma’s face drained of color.

“What did you say?”

Caleb looked at her.

“Your father had another child.”

“That’s impossible.”

“I wish it were.”

Ryan grabbed Caleb’s coat.

“You’re lying.”

Caleb didn’t resist.

“Your father wasn’t protecting Noah because Noah was special.”

“Then why?”

“Because Noah witnessed something.”

“What?”

Caleb looked at the black SUV disappearing in the distance.

“Your father found out the boy they kidnapped wasn’t the only thing they hid.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What did they hide?”

Caleb’s voice dropped.

“Money.”

Emma blinked.

“What?”

“Millions. Stolen from county development funds.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“The mill contract?”

Caleb nodded.

“Graham Bell wasn’t stealing alone.”

Emma looked at the tire.

“Then what’s underwater?”

Caleb answered quietly.

“Proof.”
