She Dragged an Old Tire From the Pond — Then Something Underwater Followed It

Chapter 10

Jonathan Reed walked into the station without resistance.

He didn’t need to.

Everyone in the county knew him.

He had spent thirty years building a reputation as an honest judge.

People stepped aside as he entered.

He looked at Emma.

“Ms. Carter.”

She didn’t answer.

Jonathan smiled gently.

“I heard about the pond.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“Stay away from her.”

Jonathan looked at his younger brother.

“You’re still protecting your father’s mistakes.”

“Did you kill Noah Whitmore?”

Jonathan’s smile faded.

“No.”

Lucas stood behind Emma.

“You ordered it.”

Jonathan looked at him.

For the first time, fear flickered in his eyes.

Then it vanished.

“You’ve mistaken survival for truth.”

Emma stepped forward.

“My father recorded everything.”

Jonathan glanced at the table.

“So you found the chamber.”

“Yes.”

“You always were stubborn.”

Emma froze.

“You knew me?”

“I knew your father.”

“You knew about Noah.”

“I knew there had been an accident.”

“Liar.”

Jonathan’s face hardened.

“Your father was not the hero you think he was.”

Emma felt anger rise.

“What did he do?”

“He stole money too.”

Daniel stared.

“No.”

Jonathan nodded.

“He used the same shell companies.”

Emma shook her head.

“My father wasn’t involved.”

Jonathan looked directly at her.

“He was.”

Then he placed a folder on the table.

Inside were bank records showing money transferred from the fraudulent accounts into an account belonging to David Carter.

Emma’s hands trembled.

“No.”

Jonathan’s voice softened.

“Your father took some of the money.”

Lucas looked confused.

“He used it to keep Noah hidden.”

Jonathan smiled.

“Exactly.”

Emma looked at Lucas.

“Is that true?”

Lucas lowered his head.

“Yes.”

Emma felt shattered.

“So Dad stole money?”

“He redirected it,” Lucas said.

“For my protection.”

“But he still broke the law.”

“Yes.”

Jonathan watched her carefully.

“Your father wasn’t innocent.”

Emma closed the folder.

“No.”

She looked up.

“But neither are you.”

Jonathan’s expression changed.

“You’re smart.”

“So was my father.”

“He trusted people too easily.”

“No.”

Emma stepped closer.

“He trusted the wrong people.”

Jonathan stared at her.

Then suddenly pulled a phone from his pocket.

Daniel reached for his weapon.

Jonathan pressed a button.

A loud explosion shook the station.

Everyone ducked.

Smoke filled the hallway.

Alarms screamed.

Jonathan moved toward the exit.

Daniel chased him.

Emma followed.

Outside, the black SUV was waiting.

Jonathan jumped inside.

The vehicle sped away.

Daniel fired at the tires but missed.

Lucas stood beside Emma.

“It’s not over.”

Emma watched the SUV disappear.

“No.”

She looked toward the evidence room.

A small red light blinked on one of the recovered recorders.

Emma stepped closer.

The recorder was still playing.

A hidden file.

Her father’s voice came through.

“Jonathan will come for the last piece.”

Emma’s heart pounded.

“What last piece?”

Her father’s voice continued.

“It’s not in the pond.”

Static.

Then:

“It is with the person I trusted most.”

The recording ended.

Everyone looked at Daniel.

Then Caleb.

Then Lucas.

Emma slowly realized there was one person no one had questioned.

Ryan.
