She Dragged an Old Tire From the Pond — Then Something Underwater Followed It

Chapter 4

The next morning, Daniel closed Bellwater Pond to the public.

The county called it a safety measure.

Emma knew better.

Something was buried there.

Something important enough that someone had spent sixteen years making sure it stayed hidden.

Daniel arranged for a dive team.

But before they arrived, Emma returned to the study.

Her father’s notebook had become an obsession.

She spread every page across the floor.

There were patterns everywhere.

Water levels.

Truck arrivals.

Names.

Dates.

One date appeared more than any other.

August 17.

Sixteen years ago, August 17 was the night Noah vanished.

Emma found another notation.

2:15 a.m. — truck at east bank.

Then:

2:40 — lights out.

Then:

3:10 — child moved.

Emma stared at the words.

“What does that mean?”

Ryan crouched beside her.

“Could be a code.”

“No.”

Emma shook her head.

“Dad wasn’t writing a story. He was recording what he saw.”

Daniel entered the room.

“We found something.”

Emma jumped up.

“What?”

“The dive team located a vehicle.”

Her heart stopped.

“In the pond?”

Daniel nodded.

“About twenty feet from where the tire was.”

They drove to Bellwater.

Divers had placed orange floats on the surface.

The old tire sat on the bank.

A chain was attached to it.

Daniel pointed.

“This chain runs underwater.”

Emma stared.

“So the tire wasn’t floating.”

“No.”

“It was attached to something.”

“Yes.”

The divers descended.

Minutes passed.

Then one surfaced.

He removed his mask.

“We found the vehicle.”

“What kind?”

“Old pickup. Buried partly in silt.”

Daniel went pale.

“Can you open it?”

The diver nodded.

“Door’s jammed. We’re working on it.”

Emma felt something brush her ankle.

She jumped.

Daniel grabbed her arm.

“What?”

“Something touched me.”

He looked at the water.

Then the surface rippled beside her.

A small circle.

Then another.

Daniel pulled her backward.

“Stay out of the water.”

The divers surfaced again.

One held a rusted metal box.

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“Where did you find that?”

“Inside the truck.”

Emma stepped closer.

The box was sealed.

A number had been painted on the lid.

17.

Daniel broke it open.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

And one blood-stained child’s shoe.

Emma’s knees almost gave out.

Ryan caught her.

Daniel pulled out a photograph.

Noah Whitmore stood beside a truck.

Behind him was the Bellwater mill.

On the reverse side was a date.

August 17.

Another photo showed Graham Bell.

Another showed Victor Shaw.

Then Emma found the last photograph.

It showed her father.

But he wasn’t alone.

He was standing beside a woman Emma had never seen before.

In her arms was a little boy.

Emma stared.

“Who is that?”

Daniel turned the picture over.

The back had only one sentence.

This is the boy they said died.

Ryan looked at his sister.

“Emma…”

A sound came from the pond.

Splash.

Then something surfaced for a second.

A pale hand.

It disappeared before anyone could react.

The divers scrambled backward.

Daniel drew his weapon.

The entire shoreline went silent.

Then a voice came from across the pond.

A man’s voice.

Calm.

Low.

“You should have left the tire alone.”
