She Dragged an Old Tire From the Pond — Then Something Underwater Followed It

Chapter 9

Lucas was found at an abandoned church three miles outside town.

He had been beaten.

But he was alive.

Emma ran toward him.

“Noah!”

He looked at her.

For the first time, she saw the boy hidden beneath the years.

“I was going to tell you,” he whispered.

“You should have.”

“I tried.”

She knelt.

“Who is Victor?”

Lucas closed his eyes.

“The man who took me.”

Emma’s chest tightened.

“You knew him all these years?”

“I remembered his face.”

“Then why didn’t you tell Dad?”

“Because Dad told me not to.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor threatened you.”

Emma’s voice broke.

“He knew about us?”

“He knew everything.”

Daniel crouched beside him.

“Where is Victor now?”

Lucas looked at him.

“He’s coming back.”

“Why?”

“To finish what he started.”

Daniel stood.

“Then tell me where he is.”

Lucas shook his head.

“He isn’t the one giving the orders.”

Emma remembered the recording.

“Graham was taking orders.”

Lucas nodded.

“Graham Bell wasn’t the top.”

“Who was?”

Lucas looked at Emma.

“Someone your father trusted.”

The room went still.

Emma’s mind raced through names.

Caleb?

No.

Ryan?

Impossible.

Daniel?

His father had been involved.

But Lucas looked directly at Daniel.

“You.”

Daniel’s face went blank.

Emma stopped breathing.

“What?”

Lucas’s eyes filled with fear.

“Not you.”

He swallowed.

“Your brother.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“I don’t have a brother.”

Lucas whispered the name.

“Jonathan Reed.”

Daniel stepped backward.

“That’s impossible.”

“He wasn’t dead.”

Emma stared.

“What is he?”

“A judge.”

Silence.

Judge Jonathan Reed.

One of the most respected men in the county.

He had presided over the redevelopment cases.

He had spoken at Emma’s father’s funeral.

He had personally encouraged the Carter family to sell the farmhouse.

Emma suddenly understood.

The sale.

The pond.

The demolition.

The pressure to clear the property.

Everything had been deliberate.

Jonathan wanted the land.

Not for money.

For the evidence beneath it.

Daniel looked sick.

“My father covered for him.”

Lucas nodded.

“Your father discovered what Jonathan was doing.”

“And?”

“Jonathan threatened to destroy his career.”

Daniel clenched his fists.

“What did Jonathan do with Noah?”

Lucas looked at him.

“He ordered Victor to move me.”

“Where?”

“Into the tunnels.”

Emma’s heart stopped.

“That’s where you disappeared?”

“Yes.”

“How did you survive?”

Lucas looked at her.

“Your father found me.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“He saved you.”

Lucas nodded.

“And then he did something else.”

“What?”

“He gave me his name.”

Emma cried silently.

“Why would he do that?”

“Because Jonathan had people everywhere.”

Lucas looked toward the window.

“Your father knew you would never be safe unless everyone believed Noah Whitmore was dead.”

Emma wiped her eyes.

“And now?”

Lucas took her hand.

“Now Jonathan thinks you found the evidence.”

A car screeched outside.

Daniel ran to the window.

A black sedan had stopped across the street.

A man stepped out.

Gray hair.

Dark suit.

Perfect posture.

Judge Jonathan Reed.

He looked directly at Emma through the glass.

Then he smiled.

Daniel whispered:

“My brother.”

Jonathan raised one hand.

Then pointed at the sheriff’s station.

Not at Daniel.

At Emma.
