She Dragged an Old Tire From the Pond — Then Something Underwater Followed It
Chapter 7
Emma could not move.
The young man stood across the chamber, breathing hard.
He looked about twenty-two.
His face was pale.
A fresh cut ran across his forehead.
Daniel raised his flashlight.
“Don’t move.”
Eli slowly lifted his hands.
“I didn’t hurt anyone.”
Emma stared at him.
“You know my father?”
Eli nodded.
“He was the first person who ever protected me.”
Ryan stepped forward.
“Why did you disappear?”
Eli looked at him.
“I didn’t.”
“You were supposed to be dead.”
“I was never dead.”
Emma took one step closer.
“Then why didn’t Dad tell us about you?”
Eli looked away.
“Because he wanted you alive.”
Silence filled the chamber.
Caleb lowered his head.
Eli looked at him.
“You told them.”
“I had to.”
“You promised.”
“I kept my promise.”
Emma interrupted.
“Someone tell me what is happening.”
Eli looked directly at her.
“Sixteen years ago, Noah Whitmore survived.”
Emma’s heart began pounding.
“He was badly injured.”
“Where is he?”
Eli’s voice trembled.
“He’s been living under another name.”
“What name?”
Eli hesitated.
Then:
“Lucas Carter.”
Ryan’s face changed.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
Emma’s mind raced.
“Lucas… our cousin?”
Eli nodded.
Emma stared.
Lucas Carter was the quiet man who had worked at a mechanic’s shop in the next county for years.
He had attended their father’s funeral.
He had hugged Emma.
He had stood beside her at the grave.
“No.”
Eli said softly, “He wasn’t your cousin.”
Emma backed away.
“Who is he?”
“Noah.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
All the pieces suddenly shifted.
Their father had kept Noah close.
Not hidden in some distant state.
Hidden in plain sight.
Lucas Carter.
Noah Whitmore.
Emma remembered the strange resemblance.
The same gray eyes.
The same scar on the left eyebrow.
She had never noticed.
But now she could not unsee it.
“Where is he?”
Eli looked toward the tunnel.
“He left when the men came back.”
“What men?”
Eli swallowed.
“The ones searching for the records.”
Daniel immediately reached for his radio.
“Units to the Carter property. Now.”
Emma grabbed Eli’s arm.
“What records?”
“The money.”
She released him.
Eli pointed toward the pond.
“There is a second chamber.”
Caleb looked shocked.
“You found it?”
Eli nodded.
“Your father showed me.”
Emma’s voice shook.
“What’s inside?”
“A safe.”
Daniel asked, “What’s in the safe?”
Eli looked toward him.
“Names.”
“Whose?”
“Everyone who took money.”
Emma felt the mystery deepen.
“Then why is Lucas running?”
Eli’s eyes filled with fear.
“Because one of those names is his.”
Emma froze.
“How could Noah be part of the theft?”
“He wasn’t.”
“Then why is his name there?”
Eli hesitated.
“Because someone used Noah’s identity.”
Daniel’s radio crackled.
A deputy shouted through the speaker.
“Sheriff! We found the black SUV.”
Daniel grabbed the radio.
“Where?”
“Outside the Carter house.”
Emma went cold.
Her father’s house.
The notebooks.
The evidence.
Everything.
She ran.
The others followed.
When Emma reached the farmhouse, the back door was hanging open.
Drawers had been pulled out.
Papers covered the floor.
The study had been destroyed.
And on the wall, written in wet mud, were four words.
YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT IT THERE.
Emma stared.
Then she saw something else.
A photograph lay beneath the desk.
It showed her father holding Noah as a child.
On the back was a date.
The day Emma was born.
And beneath it, a sentence.
Your father chose you over him.
