She Dragged an Old Tire From the Pond — Then Something Underwater Followed It
Chapter 13
Emma stared at the man in the chair.
For several seconds, she couldn’t breathe.
“Dad?”
He lifted his head.
His eyes were weak.
But they were unmistakably his.
David Carter.
Alive.
Emma rushed forward.
He reached for her.
“I knew you’d come.”
She collapsed into his arms.
Ryan stood frozen.
“How?”
David looked at both of them.
“I had to disappear after Jonathan found me.”
“But the funeral—”
“A body was buried in my place.”
Emma pulled away.
“You let us believe you were dead.”
“I had no choice.”
“You always had a choice!”
Her voice cracked.
“You could have told us.”
David closed his eyes.
“If I told you, Jonathan would have killed you.”
Ryan shook his head.
“You lied for years.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
David looked at Emma.
“Because every truth I uncovered created another person who needed protecting.”
Emma wiped her tears.
“Noah?”
David looked toward Lucas.
Lucas stepped forward.
David smiled.
“You grew up.”
Lucas nodded.
“I remembered.”
David’s expression softened.
“I know.”
Daniel crouched beside him.
“Jonathan is outside.”
David nodded.
“He’ll come down here.”
“How do we stop him?”
David pointed to the cassette player.
“The final recording.”
He pressed play.
Marcus Whitmore’s voice filled the room.
It was a confession.
He explained the stolen funds.
The shell companies.
The murder order.
Jonathan’s name.
Victor’s name.
Everything.
Then came the sound of a door opening.
A younger Jonathan spoke.
“You should have kept quiet.”
Marcus answered.
“You’ll never control all the evidence.”
Jonathan laughed.
“I don’t need to.”
A gunshot followed.
Emma covered her mouth.
The recording ended.
David looked at her.
“That is why Noah had to disappear.”
Daniel stood.
“Where’s Victor?”
David answered.
“Dead.”
Everyone looked at him.
“He tried to betray Jonathan years ago.”
“And Caleb?”
“Witness.”
Caleb nodded.
The entire case was finally visible.
Then the basement door opened.
Jonathan stood there.
His suit was torn.
His face was no longer calm.
“You really should have stayed dead, David.”
Daniel raised his gun.
“Don’t move.”
Jonathan laughed.
“You think one recording will destroy me?”
David looked at him.
“No.”
He pointed toward the wall.
A tiny red light blinked.
“Three copies went out this morning.”
Jonathan’s smile disappeared.
“Where?”
“Everywhere.”
Jonathan lunged.
Daniel tackled him.
They crashed into the floor.
Ryan pulled Emma backward.
Lucas moved to protect David.
Jonathan fought like a desperate man.
But Daniel was stronger.
He handcuffed him.
“You’re done.”
Jonathan stared at Emma.
“You don’t know what your father did.”
Emma looked at him calmly.
“He made mistakes.”
Jonathan smiled.
“Finally, some honesty.”
Emma stepped closer.
“But he spent his life fixing them.”
She pointed to the recording.
“You spent yours hiding yours.”
Police sirens filled the night.
For the first time in sixteen years, Bellwater had nothing left to hide.
