She Accidentally Sent Her Breakup Text to a Stranger—He Replied, “Don’t Send That Yet.”
Chapter 5
Ethan’s investigators traced the dormant account.
It had been created seven years earlier.
The same year Emily met Daniel.
The same year they moved into their first apartment.
The account had never held much money.
But it had been used as a pass-through.
Hundreds of thousands had moved through it.
Emily had no idea.
“Someone used your identity,” Ethan said.
“Why?”
“We don’t know.”
“Who knew enough about me to do that?”
Ethan looked at her.
“Daniel.”
She felt sick.
He didn’t say it.
He didn’t have to.
Emily confronted Daniel.
He looked exhausted.
“I didn’t create that account.”
“You knew about it.”
“No.”
“Then why does Ethan think you did?”
“Because he wants me to look guilty.”
“You told me not to trust him.”
“I still mean it.”
“Why?”
Daniel hesitated.
“My father warned me about the Coles.”
“What happened?”
“My father lost everything after Ethan’s father bought his company.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
“I know.”
He looked at her.
“But my father was convinced Ethan’s family cheated him.”
Emily stared.
“Did they?”
“I don’t know.”
“That seems to be everyone’s answer.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Emily…”
She interrupted.
“I need the truth.”
He looked down.
“I found evidence six months ago.”
“What evidence?”
“That the money wasn’t stolen.”
She froze.
“Then what?”
“It was transferred.”
“To whom?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I didn’t want you involved.”
“That didn’t work.”
He sighed.
“I know.”
Emily left.
She went directly to Ethan.
He was waiting.
“You were right.”
She told him everything Daniel had said.
Ethan listened.
Then he said:
“Daniel isn’t the only one hiding something.”
Emily stared.
“What?”
“My father.”
“What about him?”
“I found an old recording.”
He played it.
A man’s voice.
Older.
Tired.
“We didn’t steal the money.”
Emily recognized Ethan’s father from old interviews.
The recording continued.
“We moved it to protect the company.”
A second voice.
Daniel’s father.
“You’re lying.”
“No.”
“Then where is it?”
Silence.
“Somewhere they can’t reach.”
The recording ended.
Emily looked at Ethan.
“Who are they?”
He shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Then another file appeared.
A map.
A warehouse.
A date.
Tomorrow.
Emily stared.
“What’s there?”
“Whatever my father was protecting.”
They went.
The warehouse sat near the river.
Inside were old shipping records.
Photographs.
Bank documents.
And one locked metal case.
Ethan opened it.
A list of names.
Emily scanned the page.
Then stopped.
Her own name.
Next to it:
Protected witness.
She looked at Ethan.
“What does that mean?”
He stared.
“I don’t know.”
She looked further.
Her mother’s name appeared.
Then Daniel’s.
Then Ethan’s.
Four names.
One file.
And beneath them:
Project Horizon.
Ethan closed the case.
“We’re leaving.”
“No.”
“Emily.”
“I need to know.”
“Not here.”
Before they could move, the lights went out.
Footsteps echoed.
Someone had locked the warehouse doors.
A voice came through the darkness.
“You were never supposed to find this.”
Ethan stepped in front of Emily.
“Show yourself.”
A man appeared.
Daniel.
Emily stared.
“Daniel?”
He looked at her.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
He held up a gun.
“For sending the first message.”
Emily froze.
“What message?”
He smiled sadly.
“The one that made you send your breakup text.”
Ethan’s face changed.
“You.”
Daniel nodded.
“I needed Ethan to find her.”
